Would it be possible in software for Victron to add a mode of alternator temperature control of charge current?
One could have a temperatere sensitive relay on the alternator connected to the Remote on/off connector. When the relay is closed (or opened) the Orion XS would limit the charge current to say 50% (or configurable amount) of set max amperage.
Optimally one would want a temperature sensor on the alternator and a configurable ramp of amperage but that would probably need hardware.
Optimally² one would want a RPM-sensor on the Orion XS and a software configurable ramp so the alternator wouldn’t be overloaded on low RPM.
I have planed for a temp sensor on alternator but I have two parallel DC/DC 50A each. So the plan is to shut off one of the charger at 90C at alternator so I go from 100A down to 50A. I have wanted your solution too, to reduce charging at higher temp on one charger. I also cut of DC/DC-2 from Smart shunt instrument when I reach 14.1V in battery so only one charger do the finally charging to 14.2V
@haraldh it would be nice to be able to use a standard Victron temperature sensor on a temperature sensor input to the CerboGX to monitor alternator current and activate relay 2 if it was too high. Relay 2 NC contact could be connected to the Orion remote connection. When the tmeperature gets too high the remote Orion connection could open circuit and switch the Orion off, allowing the alternator to cool. That would be a good solution but unfortunately (and quite reasonably for its purpose) I believe its maximum temperature setting is 70 C . For an alternator it needs to be 95 -100 C. That could still work if an alternator temperature sensor could be used open and close the Orion remote connector via the CerboGX. It could also happen by a stand alone relay closure with a very simple bit of electronics.
