Victron and SMA integration causing unexpected behavior

Hello,
We’ve been working on a Victron inverter system for a few days now,

trying to get it to work properly with an existing SMA X25 photovoltaic inverter. Both the Victron and SMA systems are designed for self-consumption only.

Initially, we found that the Victron system wasn’t recognizing when the SMA had excess energy and wasn’t charging the battery. Later, with some troubleshooting, we discovered that the beta version of the Cerbo GX firmware v3.50-34 works well for charging the battery, BUT:

EVERY EVENING BETWEEN 18:30 AND 18:50, THE SMA RECEIVES AN INSTRUCTION FROM THE CERBO TO CHANGE THE PARAMETER “Operating mode active power setting” from the position - “External active power setpoint” to the position OFF.

(I have hidden the local address of CERBO in red)

This causes the SMA inverter to stop communicating even to limit the export of energy with its own electricity meter.

If anyone from the Victron support team is interested, I can share more information."

In addition to the main problem mentioned above, there is also a communication delay. I suspect that there is a delay in sending the signal, probably slower than 1s (SMA expects the instruction every second).

With the new version 3.50-37, the “magic” continues

Moved to beta.

As far as i was aware SMAs can only be monitored by the GX. But i could be corrected, as i don’t use them.

Is it a micro grid set up or on the ac input?

Hi both,

What changed per recent v3.50 betas is the the GX can now, as a new feature - default disabled - control the SMA. Zero feedin just like has been possible with Fronius PV inverters for a long time.

Same for Solar edge: v3.50 adds power limiting as an option.

But updating the GX shouldn’t break an existing system - we’ll look into this; thank you for the report @ToGan

Using the official firmware, the system is only in monitoring mode.
When using the beta software, the system functions identically to a Fronius system. It limits charging… everything operates as expected until 18:40 when the GX device sends a signal to the SMA inverter to disable external control. Consequently, the inverter fails to resume normal operation the following day. The SMA is conected in AC In.

Since the post was moved to beta the answer it is something being worked on.

FYI all things beta are posted here.

Hello,
the external control shutdown problem persists with the new firmware version:

I would like to point out that the signal to turn off the external control appears as soon as the inverter stops producing energy from the sun

Hi again @ToGan , I looked further into this, and I think I have a solution.

For exactly your use case, where our new feature to have the GX do power limiting causes issues because of an already installed meter, we have added an option to disable this new feature.

Please there disable the limiter and let me know if that solves it.

Thank you, Matthijs

Hello,

Thank you!
Today, I saw that the new version on firmwear and was uploaded and I installed it immediately. The feature was disabled by default, and now when I checked the SMA, everything is okay with the external control setting!

Тhis problem seems to be solved!

NO
I returned version 37 because the one with 40 doesn’t want to charge the battery … it’s not right, I’m still watching

Can you explain more?

Nothing related to battery charging or control algorithms has changed between those versions.

The only thing that changed is the default for that PV Limiter setting.

Otherwise, please it on v3.50~40, explain whats wrong and I can have a look

this morning the inverter was not producing
I will gather more information and provide feedback

Hi again @ToGan , we’ve sent you an email with some further details and questions.

And note that per v3.50~43, we’ve completely removed the new limiting feature; it will come back in a v3.60 beta soon.

Good day,
I waited a few days to observe the system’s behavior before providing feedback. However, for three consecutive days, the function has been automatically disabling itself. The current version is 40, and the function is in a disabled state.

Hi again, thanks!

We have found some improvements, which will become available in a week or two. As v3.60-beta x

For now we’ve removed all these features and are focussed on making Venus v3.5x 100% stable with new UI and more.

Please keep an eye out for beta announcements, meanwhile I recommend to update to v3.42 official or v3.50 official.
