I am installing a new battery system for a new 12V windlass. The manufacturer of the windlass quotes an inrush current for the motor of 1120A. I suppose this inrush may have a duration of 50 to 100 ms? I don’t know.
Can I use a 1000A Smart Shunt in this application, or does it require the 2000A unit?
Probably best to follow the manufacturer’s guidance… and the price difference to opt for the 2000A buys you safety and peace of mind and probably costs less than 10% of the investment in the new Windlass. Keep in mind if the Windlass stalls, saying pulling too hard, the motor stall current is going to be the same as the inrush current, but for longer than a few milliseconds.
