I made a post earlier to get some help with wiring my trailer, and I got some great product suggestions. Now I’m trying to wire it all together. My confusion stems from the fact that my caravan did not come with a chassis ground. I don’t know if I should keep my neutrals isolated from the car or not. And when both chargers are disconnected, it looks like the caravan just has no ground at all right now. Which seems weird, but that’s how they built it originally.
So, can you folks please help validate this diagram?
Also, if there’s anything else obviously wrong, please let me know (terrible fuse ratings, dumb wiring choices, etc). I’m planning on running 8AWG everywhere, with very short (0.5m max) distances between each segment in the caravan.
Whether or not you need to ground, or bond, the negative busbar to the chassis is given by your local laws. I guess with neutrals you mean the DC negative connections. Since theres no AC present (apart from the input of the bluesmart charger) id say bonding the negative busbar to the chassis is not critical, but this could be a discussion in of itself.
If you keep the electrical DC system in the caravan isolated or ungrounded, then theres no real difference between the two options above.
If you bond your negative busbar to the chassis, you should use option one. Option two will work as well, but theres the possibility of current flow from the trailers negative busbar, to the chassis, trough the towbar, to the tow cars body. It wont combust into flames because of that, and will most likely work for decades, but its not how it should be done.
