Victron Orion XS DC to DC Charger 50A - Grounding Question

I’m confused how I need to ground the Orion DC to DC charger in my camper van. Can the single ground connection on the device be connected directly to the chassis? The diagram made it look like maybe I should ground it directly to the house battery and to the chassis both. I use a LYNX Distributor for grounding so this would mean I connect it to the chassis and to the Lynx distributor (which connects to the battery negative and chassis). Can that introduce a ground loop (other devices could reach the chassis in multiple paths–through the distributor or the DC to DC connection to chassis.

Can I just either ground the DC to DC Charger to the chassis directly OR to the Lynx Distributor–but not both? If so, which would be better?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Both is never good.

If you have a Lynx…use it.

If not, chassis will always do, unless you have an aluminium car. In this case I’m sorry for you :pensive:

Out of curiosity: what’s the issue with an aluminium car?

Aluminum cars are like toasters, cheap in production and not repairable with adequate costs.

And, electrically its a lousy conductor.

Interesting, because when I visited DESY (the electron synchrotron in germany) all the conductors along the accelerator ring were made solely from aluminium.

Aluminum has 61 percent of the conductivity of copper, but has only 30 percent of the weight of copper. That means that a bare wire of aluminum weighs half as much as a bare wire of copper that has the same electrical resistance.

Maybe weight was the deciding factor for desy ?

And about 3 times the conductivity of steel… so for using it as a ground in a car chassis it’s maybe better…?

Possibly… but I would guess it was about price and that you find more people with certification to weld Aluminium… which likely are things to keep in mind when you have to build multiple 100+cm² bus bars that run for 6+km in total length…

Did you get a clear answer to your question?
