Apparently the “pin” is no longer working, topics appear according to date now, so announcements basically are shown last:
Pins are unpinned automatically after it is read. You can change that on each topic by setting the pinned status at the bottom of the post.
Ah, okay - so not a bug, it’s a feature 
Fine with that, just was confused, because the tooltip still says “This is pinned for you and will appear at top” - which it doesn’t.
Even discourse has its quirks. Though, unlike the old forum, they are ones we can live with

Absolutely, most important is that the performance is fine now. Old forums were frustrating to hop between topics or “quickly” check an answer from the phone.
Usability is also way better.
