Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Isolated wont charge

Hope someone can help. please.

Supplying 14.4V to unit from car, output 13.4V,
Loop installed and checked continuity,
Charger Enabled,
Engine shutdown enabled (without enabled, just get error on iphone app).
Start Voltage 14.00V,
Delayed Start Voltage 13.3V
Shutdown Voltage 13.1V,
Input Voltage Lock Disabled.
Battery is a Renogy 300Ah lithium Battery.
Car is a 2024.5 Ford Ranger with Smart Alternator.

Issue is that the iphone app (all updated) shows “Bulk Charging” then approx 5 seconds later, shows no charging.

It just flip flops between the two without any charge going to the battery. Checked with C-Clamp meter.

Solar input through MPPT victron works fine, battery charger works fine, DC - DC charger not charging at all.

If I swith off the isolating switch to the battery, the app will show “Bulk Charging” continuously, even through the battery is diconnected.

If I disable Engine Shutdown Detection, the app will then alternate between “No Charge” and an error 4 stating the loop is not connected. (which it is connected)

Have searched the forums for an answer but no luck.

A few others had the same issue but no answer.

Hope someone can help solve this issue.
Thank you
Kind Regards

14v …start bulk charge

High current fllowing, voltage drop on inputwiring increases.

13v cutoff reached, charger stops…

No current, no voltage drop, the game can start again.

Voltage drop may be on plus, minus or both

Thanks Ludo, I’ll change my settings to suit what you mention and try again. Will let you know if it works tomorrow.

I think you have misunderstood, he was not advocating setting changes but that you may have an installation problem. You may have a poor wiring connection on the input wiring. The XS sees 14.4V input so starts charging. You get some current flowing, high resistance so the voltage at the XS terminals falls below cut off and stops charging. Current stops, voltage recovers and the cycle continues. Check your wiring, crimps, bolts, breakers etc. Try to reduce the XS current limit till it works and use a multimeter to check voltages. Do you have cheap resettable breakers, these often cause problems.

Hi pwfarnell,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I know all my crimps and connections are good hence why this is baffling me.

I am using good quality 6B&S cable all the way from the car battery to the lithium battery so I know the wiring is good.

As for the breakers, no, I don’t use these terrible components. I am using top quality Marine rated fuses.

I’ll check what you suggest later today (when I finish work) along with some other ideas I have.

I’ll repost when I figure it out (or not).

Thanks again

Hi all,

I managed to get the unit functioning at full 30Amps without interuption.

I set the “Start Voltage” to 13.7V, Set Delayed Start Voltage to 13.7V and Shutdown Voltage to 12.8V and away it went.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Kind Regards
Dean
