Multiplus ii GX firmware upgrade

I am planning to upgrade the firmware in my Multiplus ii GX 24/3000/70-32 from the current version 497 to the latest version 556.

This is so that the improvements to generator stability can be applied and the ‘weak AC’ option turned off to hopefully allow full charge from my Hyundai diesel generator.

However, one of the warnings flagged is to ensure the GX device is not powered by the inverter. As it is integral to the Multiplus device, does anyone know if it remains powered by the DC input during updates?

Thanks

Strange message…
The GX board is powered, IIRC, from the battery side/connection.
So a (charged) battery must be connected.

Strange message?

Thanks Alex :+1: That was my assumption, but I didn’t want to inadvertently brick my Multiplus :slightly_smiling_face:

I was referring to the warning message on the screen…

Ah! At least it’s not me being strange then

It’s a standard message, I guess the VRM portal doesn’t check what kind of GX device you have.

Probably…
Although, when it checks which firmware is current and if a new firmware is available, the kind of GX device one has is a must, I suppose…
The Product ID is telling this, isn’t it?

The ID for MultiPlus-II, MultiPlus-II GX and EasySolar-II GX are the same, so at that step it doesn’t know what GX device you have.
From the step before it should know what GX device is installed but it doesn’t use that info to modify the messages.

IMO that message only applies to rPi users.
I would never connect an original Victron GX device to AC with a power supply, I always connect it directly to the battery.

But it’s better to have that message and don’t need it than to need it but don’t have it.
I guess most users don’t even read that messages.
Two weeks ago we had a few cases in the German space where the users complained the all settings are gone after the update but he just didn’t read the messages carefully.

Thanks for the replies Alex and Matthias.

I am feeling quite pleased with myself then for properly reading messages and checking before blindly updating and breaking something - even though in this case it looks like I wouldn’t have done :slightly_smiling_face:

I will manually amend the Multiplus settings after update rather than converting and resending the existing ones, as there a few changes to make to hopefully see closer to the full 70A charge from the diesel generator rather than the 35-40A due to the ‘weak AC’ setting.

We will see. The generator is rarely needed, but good to know it is charging at its best when fired up.

Thanks for the explanation and clarification. :+1:
I had the impression that each product has a distinct PID, from the much known to me Multi RS.
Multi RS one tracker has one PID and Multi RS two trackers has a different PID.

IIRC you must remove ESS assistant (if you use it) before upgrading

Just to wrap this up, the firmware update to 556 worked flawlessly, and the settings were then updated using remote veconfigure.

So the warnings were not relevant to the built in GX device, but at least raised awareness of the correct process to follow.

It remains to be seen if the update fixes the weak AC reduced charge current issue next time the generator is fired up :+1:

I find the Victron instructions incomplete and confusing, when you get a new inverter delivered there should be clear instructions how to configure it.

Instead you get a book with specifications in many languages and very little useful instructions, online there are so many Victron pages it’s very difficult to find the correct page for your setup.

For example configuring an ESS system why is it not possible to give a direct link with the book. For more complex issues is very easy to get one seemingly unconnected setting wrong to stop the system working

Because every battery is treated differently and every set up has its own needs. A one size fits all book would end up being a monster

In any case physical books are becoming a thing of the past everything is online now.

All the devices have a clear up to date product page with everything on it now.

And some neat short step by step videos by vIctron on you tube as well as a free account on victron professional for those who want to do more complex things.

Generator run up today for a check, and I can confirm that v556 has overcome the ‘weak AC’ issue and it now charges at the full 70A

Hyundai DHY8000SELR 7KW Diesel generator.

Well done to the developers
