MultiPlus-II constantly switching between Passthrough and Bulk

Hi Everyone!

I have recently configured the ‘charge current control’ assistant using AUX1 on the MultiPlus-II connected to the NC Relay 2 on the Cerbo GX. The idea is to use the ‘Relay 2’ switch in VRM to enable/disable the charger. This all works perfectly fine, but since adding the ‘charge current control’ assistant, the MultiPlus keeps switching into ‘Bulk’ for about a second before switching back to ‘Passthrough’. This can happen multiple times a minute with gaps of up to 30 minutes and I have been unable to spot any sort of pattern. Note that this only occurs when in Passthrough and not when Inverting (battery power).

My setup is as follows:

  • MultiPlus-II (v558) with AC Input 1 connected to grid and VSense connected directly to the battery terminals
  • Multiple assistants are configured to switch in and out of Passthrough based on SOC (see screenshots)
  • Cerbo GX (v3.67) with DVCC enabled
  • SmartShunt Battery Monitor connected via VE.Direct
  • Multiple Victron MPPT’s connected via VE.Direct

What I have tried so far:

  • Replaced the cable between AUX1 and Relay 2 - no change
  • Measured the voltage of AUX1 when it switches to Bulk to see if it changes - voltage remains exactly the same
  • Disabled the charger in VE Configure under the ‘Charger’ tab - no change
  • Disabled VSense in VE Configure - no change
  • Removed ‘programmable relay (3)’ which prevents AC Input 1 from being ignored once the SOC reaches 75% during charging - no change

Has anyone else experienced this and know the cause? If not, can anyone think of anything else to try as I am stumped?!

Thanks in advance.

Same here. WIth 3x MP2 5000/48 (v556). 3f setup. I noticed the same behavior.

Interesting… well at least it isn’t just me! Did you find any ways of mitigating it?

I’m also glad I’m not alone. I use two assistants. One to ignore AC IN and the other to enable charging using the Rele2 cerbo. This is for full fill info. I noticed this weekend when I was solving something in the technical room. Charging always turns on for 1-2 seconds and before the current can rise, it’s immediately turned off again. So apart from the fact that it’s annoying and strange, I don’t think it’s a big deal. I haven’t tried completely disabling charging as a whole function. But I would have to download the configuration, I don’t have time right now. Maybe on the weekend.

Yes, that sounds exactly the same as me. I did try disabling the charger in VE Configure, interestingly the ‘charge current control’ assistant still works and charges the batteries even though it is disabled in the config! This didn’t make any difference to it switching in/out of Bulk every few seconds though.

Sounds like it might be a bug in the firmware?

It’s possible. Interestingly, no one else has complained yet. I’ve noticed that it sometimes shows up in the console as well. Passthrough / bulk. I don’t know if I didn’t notice it before, or if I wasn’t paying attention.

Nobody? Nothing?

On Weeknd i Will tray disable charging and charging current asistant.

Hey Petr, I suspect the issue is with the ‘Disable the charger when the charge current should be zero’ option in the ‘charge current control’ assistant. If I uncheck it, the Multiplus shows ‘Bulk’ and delivers about 30W to the batteries. Oddly, it occasionally spikes to 300W at similar intervals to it switching in/out of Passthrough/Bulk. I will keep testing.

I am pretty sure this is a bug rather than a config issue, but I am not sure how we report it.

Yes, it is possible. I also have this option turned on. And I think this problem can only be solved by turning off charging completely and deleting the charge current assistant. Unfortunately I haven’t had time for it yet, Christmas madness…

I think this forum is the right place to report it, but no one has had time yet.

AI claims, among other things, that fluctuations in charging current can be caused by an unstable network. And I know that I have regular interference, drops. That’s why in the summer, when there is enough sun, I go off-grid. Unfortunately, the current production is sad. 2.1kW today from an 18kwp system.

I finally got around to changing the configuration. I deleted the assistant for changing the charging current and turned off the charger. At the same time, I upgrade the versions to v558. And since then I have the multiplus only in passthrough mode. The disadvantage is that I can’t charge from the grid.

It was more of an emergency, backup function anyway. I’ll probably get one of those chargers from Aliexpress for a few euros and then I’ll be fine.

But I insist that there is something wrong with the charge current assistant.
