I have a 12v system with a starter battery and a housebank of 2 lead batteries on a boat.
I am changing the house bank to a lifepo4 house bank (unfortunately) ]without low temp shutoff.
The system has a Victron Smartsolar mppt 75/15 with bluetooth built in, and a Victron Globallink520.
For charging the lifepo4 i plan a Orion XS to be able to charge the battery with the engine in the winter on a longer trip without sun and a (still to choose) lifpo4 ‘fast’ charger on 230V.
I use a victron smartshunt with bvluetooth to see how the house bank is doing.
A Ruuvi tag gives me info abaout temperature, humidity and pressure over VRM.
But, i learned that i need a Victron Smart battery sense to be able to stop the Smartsolar, Orion and charger below 5 degrees Celcius.
That means my VE network will have the mppt, orion, globallink, batterysense, smartshunt, ruuvitag and charger, that is 7 items. I understood that i connect only 5 devices via the network by bluetooth. Is that right? Can i connect the 6th and 7th one via a cable or is 5 still the max?
I saw that i can expand the VE network with an extra dongle (can’t find a product and price though). It all seems to get a bit fiddly, with too many connected devices and too many points of failure.
I can, off course, also change the lifepo4 battery with one that does have low temp protection. That helps till i buy the next blue victron box , which will probably be an extra mppt.
How do i deal with the maximum of 5 connections in a VE network best in this case?
Yes, the smartshunt has an “aux” port, i found the temp sensor for that now and the necessary manual.
So the VE smart has room for 10 devices, that is more than enough for now.
But my manual says that only 5 bluetooth connections are possible. That means that i use the VE-direct cable (white connector with 4 wires) for connection above the 5 bluetooth.
The lifepo4 battery has no low temp shutdown. I guess the easiest way is to order a battery with low temp shutdown as most 230v lifepo4 chargers do not have it either. Lets see if Santa accepts returns
Yeah, there seems te be a difference between rtfm an youtube lurking
Official victron dealer video though. I read the ve smart networking manual later, but the max 5 ‘sticks’ in memory.
Changed my battery in one with low temp sensor. ‘Santa’ had no problems with that.
Took the whole electricity setup down and now slowly building it up again. Heating is also down, quite a cold job.
I have some older Victron appliances, for instance a Phoenix inverter form around 2000 with a metal casing that has a blue case-‘ground’ wire. It goes a long way to the other side of the panel, just to be connected with a normal minus terminal. (plastic boat ) Why is there no internal connection or direct connection to minus?
