Lost communication between Smartshunt 300a and raspberry pi 4b

I have a small solar system with a MPPT Smart solar charger 100/30, Smartshunt 300a and a raspberry pi 4b running the latest version of Venus OS. I connected both the Smartshunt and the solar charger to the raspberry pi using homemade comm JST-USB cables. Everything was communicating just fine. After about a day or 2 the Smartshunt stopped communicating with the RBPi. I’ve had no success in re-establishing communication in spite of trying 2 additional homemade comm cables. I know….the first recommendation that community members will recommend: use genuine Victron Direct to USB cables! I have one coming.

But, I was wondering if there might be some other reason why I can’t get the Smartshunt to communicate with the Raspberry pi.

Thanks for any feedback.

Update: Installed a genuine VE direct to USB data cable and that fixed my issue. Something about these “cheap” JST and USB cables that the VE devices don’t like. Just saying……

I find things are cheap for a reason , I have spent a lot of money on Victron equipment so would never compromise with anything cheap, but at least you all sorted now.
