High cell voltage after expanding the system

Hello everyone,

I have the following question:

My Victron system has been running smoothly and reliably for 4 years.

In spring, I added a further 2 kW of PV power via an MPPT 150/60. Since then, I keep getting the following error message:

“High cell voltage”

The MPPT then switches to the yellow area or to “Absorption”.

Why would the cells suddenly become unbalanced, or one cell reach too high a voltage, specifically after connecting the new MPPT?

Could it be that the additional MPPT is feeding too much power or current into the battery around midday, when the battery is already almost full, causing one cell’s voltage to rise too high?

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or which settings I should check first?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Could be a few reasons, but without supporting data and history, it is guesswork.
It may be a case that your batteries now get to spend more time at top of charge, balancing.
You would need to look at historical charts for charging.
What version is your GX? New versions have a modified charging algorithm for pylontech to help prevent these issues.

You could also have developed, or had but not noticed, a cell issue. You would need to pull the min/max voltage charts to see.

A connected mppt under dvcc control cannot overcharge your battery.
Typically, high voltage alarms resolve themselves with enough time on charge.
There are ways to encourage balancing, assuming that is actually an issue, by limiting CVL manually and then slowly raising it.

OK, thanks. I’ll take a closer look at the history.

A bit more information about the system would be helpful.

Were you feeding back to grid before the additional new mppt?

As an observation that are probably charging up faster than previously and the battery has aged a bit.

@klhof

Which Pylontech batteries do you have, and how many?
It may be that the charging current is so high that the batteries’ balancer can’t keep up.

Feel free to show the following values on the Advance graph:

  • Battery voltage
  • Battery current
  • CVL
  • CCL
  • Max Cell Voltage

6x Pylontech 2000

Thanks, that sounds plausible.

I’ve read that you should leave the batteries fully charged for several days to allow the cells to rebalance themselves?

That can help, but balancing can be a slow process. It depends on the scale of the problem.

How is it wired? Do you have them a single stack? Or in pairs.
It also might help to shuffle them around a bit even before you keep them charged .

What do you mean by rearranging?
They are stacked on top of one another, with the outgoing connection on the 1st and 6th going to the busbar.

The Pylontech cables are rated for a maximum of 100 A with 125 A protection.

I would have grouped three batteries together, each with one set of battery cables.

Can Venus OS show which of the six batteries has high-voltage alarms?

There is also information about this in the FAQ section at the end of the ESS manual.

This depends on the firmware on the batteries.

Take the end ones and put them in the middle and the middle ones on the end.

The current sharing problem is the main one now that you have more charge power. They have aged now, you will start to see the long term effects of the long stack set up.

Thanks, the information is TOP-notch

Where would you find the information showing which battery is generating the error message?

the first 01 is the first stack

the following numbers are the batteries in the stack, counting from the Master

So here, the 1st + 2nd and 3rd + 2nd batteries

Thanks, I found it.
