Help with optimal configuration of shunt and charger

I have a setup EasySolar2 GX 48V 3000: solar, charger and smartshunt. 4x AGM

I suspect that the charger levels and shunt settings are not correct, or can be adjusted. But where to start, and how to understand every setting correctly? I have the impression the capacity is lower than expected.

The battery data sheet:

Current settings for the charger:

Shunt:

Your settings look OK. Your absorption and float voltages are at the high end of the range, this will result in faster ageing of the batteries. The temperature compensation should be -120mV/C, this is 4 x -30mV/C, if they run hot a lot your figure would not debate the voltsge enough. The SmartShunt settings look good for an AGM battery.

i am missing the expert mode settings of the mppt. The value of “charges voltage” in Smartshunt has to be a little lower than float voltage. If the Mppt changes to float ist can not synchronisize.

Here it is:

This is what is printed on the battery. What would be better setting, and why not comply with what is stated on the battery?

The Voltages are o.k for loadig if the battery empty. But in solar the battery ist loaded when ist ist almost full. Better is 56.8V and 54V for saving water

I have AGM?

Yes, therefore you should save the Water too. If the battery generates too much Gas, it will leave the Battery via valves. And you are not able to refill it.

Good, then I understand this too.

Still three things I’m not sure about:

  1. How to determine correct battery capacity to set?
  2. Tail current?
  3. Charge efficiency factor?

The settings you have here look fine. Try if it synchronizes to 100% correctly when the battery is full. If its too early, adjust tail current down, if its too late or not at all, adjust tail current up.

Battery capacity is rated capacity, so in your case 65Ah x4 i guess.

How will I know when the battery is full? Isn’t that what the monitor is there for?

When I look at my first post, I say I have 4x AGM. The specs follows in the next photo. It says Nominal 305Ah, and for rated there is four other capacities. So what is this guessing?

Just me not really thinking straight. Sorry about that, 260Ah is correct since all four batteries are in series.

The different ratings in the specs are at different discharge rates. So for example, if you only slowly discharge the batteries, then they can deliver 305Ah, but if you discharge fast then they can only deliver 195Ah.

Thats ultimately what the peukert exponent is there for.

If we take the 20h and 5h discharge rate and their currents 13A and 43A, then the resulting peukert is 1.158
When using the 100h and 20h as the base then it would be 1.110
So 1.13 sounds reasonable

Once the battery has reached absorption level and the charge current goes down towards zero.
Ideally the shunt resetting to 100% happens at the same time.

Yes, but you have to verify that it works correctly

Ah. Good explanation. I have a normal load of 0.4A, only a few days a month the load is 4.0 - 5.0 A. This is at a cabin not used every day. So if reaching for the 305Ah rating, what would bite me behind eventually?

Ok, so waiting for a day with more sun to see if it happens when charging current drops. Today no lower than 4.5A from the charger.
