[Dynamic ESS] Add SOC level, below which NOT TO SELL energy to grid, but only support AC loads.

There is “MIN SOC” option in Dynamic ESS. Would be good to have another battery level option, below which Dynamic ESS will cease selling energy to grid and use remaining battery capacity to support AC loads to maintain zero grid import. For instance “MIN SOC” 25% and “NO SELL” 50%.

Currently ESS frequently sells to much energy at evening/night up to MIN SOC and sometimes even decides to charge from grid in the mornings, while energy price is high, not waiting for PV to fully kick in.

Hi kbb,
This is a great idea!
It is the same for me, in the morning the system discharges to the SOC limit and then is providing the energy for the loads from the grid, wich is way more expensive.
@dfaber is there a possibility to integrate this into the VRM version of DESS?? Or is this maybe already possible in the NodeRed version?
Thank you in advance!

Yes this will be great, for I have the same experience with Dynamic ess sell to much.

Yeah same here! DESS sells energy from battery to grid in the mornings, until minimum SOC is reached, and will then start to buy back energy from the grid at about the same price to power the loads. A little frustrating

@kbb

I only just noticed your post and agree fully.

I posted the same on a different post.

I am also looking to be able to limit the “sell down to %”

I have manually been selling down to 50% SOC during our peak export rate on our Octopus Flux UK tariff between 16:00-19:00.

This leaves enough capacity in the batteries to cover all our evening and overnight and next morning usage.

But I would also like to have the option that Dynamic ESS does not charge our batteries overnight during the cheaper rate because we are fortunate enough to (for a large percentage of the year) be able to fully recharge by solar by around lunchtime the next day.

We have all our house circuits connected to the critical loads side of the MP2 to give whole home backup in case of a power cut.

I would like this as well.
Take for example this morning (NL, dynamic pricing).
Because of the high net price, DESS starts to dump energy to the grid up to minimum SOC level.
Though, due to weather conditions I wont get enough solar until ~12pm and between 8 and 12am I had to run from grid.

Now, I could’ve micromanage’d it but I like to fire and forget.
Having a minimum dump to grid soc level, would have helped me in this case, as I could have set it to (for example) 25% SOC while the battery to load can go as low as to 15% SOC.

I wonder though, if DESS did a better job of reacting to realtime pv/consumption, would this still be needed? In your example screenshot @kbb, was it actually planning to import between 8-9am or this happened because to less than expected PV and/or more tha expected consumption?

Adding additional configuration like this might be tempting but IMO may not make sense if it’s primarily to work around a different issue.

I suggested this DESS SOC a couple of weeks ago. Got no reaction from Victron. Min SOC is almost always reached at a high price point. So then the system has to buy back expensive energy.

There is no way DESS can react if system found itself at MIN SOC in the morning, and PV forecast was wrong.

@hp197 what’s your system efficiency set at DESS - looks like you have a high AC load at night?

What has system efficiency todo with dead usage (night usage)?
I have a dead usage of ~600w due to fridges, electronic, etc and my system efficiency is set to 85% in dbus.

@hp197 did you tried switching from Trade Mode to Green Mode. ESS SoC Level 10%… Trade Mode from 100% to 30% from 29-10% Green Mode? based on your night consumption and battery capacity?

i have 3 DESS Running for testing

1 - DESS with Green Mode sell price is fix, buy price is dynamic
2 - DESS with Trade Mode sell price is fix, buy price is dynamic
3 - DESS with Trade Mode sell price is dynamic, buy price is dynamic

I don’t think Victron is reacting on this community anymore.
I wonder what route we have to follow to get support, and a better product.
Realy have no problem to invest some time to figure this one out.

Kind regards,
Jacco

This is on green mode

I know they are reading, or at least @dfaber is as he also reacts on my beta bug reports.
They’ve also specially asked the community to come with proposals towards DESS so I guess some point in time they’ll look at this.
My guess is that the prio is currently more on shipping venusos / new gui and once that hits the market they’ll look back into DESS.

Well, they did begin of this month.
Affcourse they are busy with other stuff, but this is not a solid ‘‘victron like’’ feature at the moment.
I realy hope they come with a solution soon…

@hp197 did you check the NodeRed DESS Flow - with Battery_Goal SoC and Battery_Goal Hour.

Victron will do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted.

Im not using the NodeRed flow, as victron themself say the NodeRed implementation is a proof-of-concept and will become obsolete (see: GitHub - victronenergy/dynamic-ess)

Instead im solely using the VRM portal for the DESS functionality.
