Direct load to 330Ah 12.5v LiFePO4 battery

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid or too basic question but, I’m about to buy a new camper with a Victron installation for the habitation side.

I’d like to be able to run a few 12v accessories (compressor & winch) that need direct crocodile clip connection to a 12v battery. The cab battery is very difficult to access so, am I ok connecting this dumb load directly to the Victron LiFePO4 battery?

What type of Victron lithium battery.

A Victron Lithium SuperPack battery has a BMS inside which will disconnect if the battery is over discharged. It may also disconnect if you try to draw too much current from a winch which can be a high draw.

A Victron Lithium Smart battery does not have a BMS inside so you should never connect dumb loads direct to this because it could over discharge the battery and damage it. This type of battery should have an external BMS and depending on the type a battery protect to disconnect loads. You have to choose the correct point to connect loads so that the battery is protected. If you have Lithium Smart batteries and you need further advice then you will need to give us more details of the BMS type and how it is wired up to any other battery protection components.

I’m not 100% sure :frowning:

It’s new and has Smart Battery branding. It’s connected to a MultiPlus 12/3000/120-16 230V VE.Bus

I guess my best bet/the right thing is to make some way of connecting to the 12v or even using the 240v supply downstream of the multiplus unit.

If there is a shunt in the system then you do NOT want to attach the load at the battery. The load should be connected downstream of the shunt.

Battery → Shunt → Load

Post a photo of the battery. If it is Victron lithium Smart then DO NOT connect direct. You need to find out more about your system especially what BMS you have so you know how it operates. Ask another question if you need help once you have found out what you have.
