I aquired two 160 Ah li smart batteries and are now trying to setup a system for my sailing boat. Can I use a multiplus12/1600/70 to charge the batteries with a VEbus bms V2 as bms and connected over the VE bus? And what settings do I need for the multiplus? I cannot find in the manuals if this is going to work. and how to setup the multiplus. For the alternator I am going to use a Orion DC-DC charger and the solar panel (only 50 W) is using a smart solar MPPT charger. Both can be controlled by the BMS using the charger output of the BMS. The 12 V users are protected by a smart BPS. The 230 VAC is externally protected by a isolation guard (NST-IBT)
I have victron connect and VE config with dongle (the old MKII) available on my laptop
The VE.Bus BMS V2 can communicate with the MultiPlus via VE.Bus to enable or disable charging and inversion as needed to protect the batteries.
The MultiPlus will automatically respond to the signals from the VE.Bus BMS to stop charging or disable inversion during critical conditions like overvoltage or undervoltage.
MultiPlus Configuration for Lithium Batteries:
Using the Victron VE.Configure software with your MK3-USB interface (or the older MKII dongle), you’ll need to configure the MultiPlus settings for lithium batteries. Here’s how:
Step 1: Set Up VE.Configure
Connect your MultiPlus to your laptop using the MKII interface.
Open VE.Configure and load the current settings from the MultiPlus.
Step 2: Configure Battery Settings
Go to the General Settings tab and configure the following:
Battery Type: Lithium Smart(LiFePO4)
Charge Voltage: Use the recommended values from your Lithium Smart batteries manual. For Victron Lithium Smart batteries, typical values are:
Bulk/Absorption Voltage: 14.2–14.4V (check your specific battery manual)
Float Voltage: 13.5V (or the recommended float voltage)
Absorption Time: Set based on battery capacity (for 160Ah batteries, this might be around 2 hours).
Step 3: Configure Charge Current
In the Charger Settings tab:
Maximum Charge Current: Set this to match your battery’s charging specs (e.g., if 70A is too high for your batteries, reduce it to the recommended charge current).
AC Input Current Limit: Set this to match the shore power or generator supply available to avoid overloading.
Step 4: Enable VE.Bus BMS Support
In the Lithium Battery Settings section:
Enable Battery Management System (BMS): Ensure this is selected so the MultiPlus responds to VE.Bus BMS signals.
Solar and DC-DC Charger Integration:
Solar MPPT Charger:
Connect the MPPT charger’s Remote On/Off terminals to the Charge Disconnect output of the VE.Bus BMS V2.
The BMS will disable the solar charger in cases of overvoltage or overtemperature.
Orion DC-DC Charger:
Similarly, connect the DC-DC charger’s Remote On/Off input to the VE.Bus BMS V2’s Charge Disconnect terminal.
