Hi everyone,
I am currently working on optimizing and better understanding my Victron installation and the use of Dynamic ESS. I have a specific question regarding how DESS handles the maximum battery charge current when an external MPPT is added to the system.
My current setup:
- Grid connection: 1-phase 35 A (± 8 kW)
- Inverter/Charger: Victron Multi RS Solar 48/6000
- Battery: 32.2 kWh (likely to be expanded to 64.4 kWh)
- Solar DC: 5.4 kWp DC-PV (connected directly to the Multi RS for now)
- Solar AC: 2.7 kWp AC-PV
The situation & my question:
The Multi RS Solar can charge the battery with a maximum of 100 A (approx. 5.4 kW). This is a hard limit of the device itself, regardless of whether the power comes from the internal DC tracker, the AC-PV, or from the grid.
When charging the battery at night using DESS, that ~5.3 kW (100 A) is the maximum charge rate. However, if I expand my system with a separate, external MPPT for the DC-PV, the total power available to charge the battery during sunny hours increases. This is because the external MPPT charges directly onto the DC busbar, bypassing the 100 A limit of the Multi RS.
My question is: How does DESS currently handle this in its calculations and settings?
In the DESS settings, I do not see any option to differentiate between the maximum charge rate from the grid (limited by the Multi RS to 100 A) and the maximum charge rate during the day (Multi RS + external MPPT).
- Does the DESS algorithm automatically take this into account based on the connected devices visible in the GX device overview?
- Do I need to adjust a specific DC charge limit somewhere so that DESS knows it can charge at more than 100 A during sunny hours?
Thank you in advance for your insights!
