Hello, I’m looking for a Certificate UL for Orion-TR Smart 24/24-12 (280W).
I don’t see that the Orion-Tr Smart range has UL certificates, but all available certificates can be found on the Support page after selecting your product range, under “Certificates” on the left side bar. Not sure if yours is isolated or non, but as an example the certificates available for the Orion-Tr Smart Isolated range: https://www.victronenergy.com/technical-support?product_id=403
Thank you very much for your answer.
I have already found the European certificates, but I have to offer 50 Orion-TR Smart 24/24-12 and other material to a Swiss manufacturer who will then deliver the vehicles to the USA. Unfortunately, this is not possible without UL. Is there an alternative? Or is it still possible for Victron to obtain the UL certificate? ![]()
I would doubt it; I don’t know of any low-voltage DC-DC charger manufacturer that has UL certs on these components to be honest. Sterling Power doesn’t, REDARC doesn’t, certainly the off-brands like Renogy or etc don’t.
Given the incredible cost and time involved in certifying a product and its production line to one or more UL standards, I certainly wouldn’t hold my breath on one for these units.
I’m also surprised that the OEM is requiring a UL cert for a component like this; I’m in the US, and know of no OEM here who wouldn’t accept the ECE and ISO certificates for low-voltage low-current DC-only units in their production vehicles. Certainly when one gets into HV products for electric vehicles and such then UL certs become requirements, and of course anytime AC is involved then UL can come into play, but for little 12/24v strictly DC units with no connection to mains, I don’t know of any US requirement for such, or indeed what UL certification would even apply.
That said, I’m certainly no UL expert, so perhaps I’m missing something there. Since this community is mostly just staffed by other Victron system owners, enthusiasts, and some volunteers, I’d suggest reaching out to Victron’s sales team directly for more information by using the email address applicable to your region; you can find that information here: Contact - Victron Energy
Thank you very much for your detailed and helpful answer. It was really interesting for me because I’m not very familiar with UL certification matters (or rather I have no idea at all)
. So your explanation made perfect sense and clarified a lot. I also completely agree that Victron wouldn’t pursue an UL certification just for a batch of 50 units. Your perspective on how these certifications typically apply to DC-only devices was very useful and gave me a much better understanding of the situation. Thanks again for taking the time to explain this so thoroughly. I’ve much appreciated it!
