Anyway, an adapter like that (USB to serial) is a good thing to have for a enthusiast DIYer, not to mention that it may work OK for the purpose, only the place for connection to be different. 
itâs cheap, I ordered one, just for fun, Itâs good to have around the house

Please be aware this is a rather exceptional situation. I would like to understand what is going on and George would like to keep his system running. Normally you would just get it back to your dealer / installer (if it is under warranty), well and reinstall it first. @GeorgeD Donât reinstall this unit though. We are going to do low level debugging or you can return the unit, so we can find out what is going on here.

I have a RPI3B+ for testing. It had 3.32.
Updated from itâs firmware - online updates page to 3.70.
Went OK and worked OK.
Rebooted from the firmware - stored backup page back to 3.32.
After reboot, there is no 3.70 alternative in the firmware - stored backup page, like was never installed.
Is this normal behavior or the firmware should be there both?

That is expected behavior. 3.32 canât mount the newer ext partition, since it got a new feature flag. So it is unable to verify if there is a valid backup image and what its version is.

v3.60 introduced it. v3.60 should be able to report the v3.70 backup image.
