I will upgrade my alternator and use it for charging Victron NG batteries. I will use a Small BMS NG and Smart Battery Protect for stopping the charging and prevent draining the batteries. I do not have a Cerbo. Can I use a Smartshunt as the shunt for the Wakespeed 500. There are no small terminals on this shunt? Or do I need a separate shunt for the Wakespeed 500?
This will not work, at least not when using a single BatteryProtect for both charge and discharge, since BPs are only unidirectional. So you could use one to shutoff loads and another to shutoff charge sources. But even then i would be cautious with shutting off a charge source with a BP. Theres scenarios where a reverse current can flow from the battery to the charge source, which would instantly fry the BP.
I assume you are talking about the shunt capability that the WS500 offers? For this you need a bare Shunt, without the electronics, see this post for example
But adding a shunt to the WS500 wont help much if theres nothing reading that information. I recommend to use a GX device and a regular VE.Bus BMS NG. The WS500 fully integrates into the Victron system, through Canbus. Then theres no need to physically switch it.
The VE Bus BMS should ifeally be used if there is a Multiplus/ Quattro type inverter, a work around is required if there is no inverter.
The Small BMS as per another BMS can shut down the WS500 from the ATC signal to the feature in wire.
There is a new BMS coming soon based on VE CAN which may be better, but I am not sure about expected date.
Yes, thanks for clarifying. I was confused with the Lynx Smart BMS, so theres no real benefit over the SmallBMS here.
I suspected that but never used it myself
Thanks for your replies. I will use two separate smart Battery Protect one for charge and one for discharge. And as I guessed a separate shunt will be needed for my Wakespeed regulator. I will also use an Victron Argofet and let my alternator also charge a small acid lead start battery. My Wakespeed Will be configured for Lithium but I belive it does not matter for the start battery. It should be charged enough anyway. Will this be a reasonable set up?
