Can I use a my generator to a DC to DC charger

Hi,

I have a 50 amp victron DC to DC charger. I want to run it directly from my petrol generator to charge my van leisure battery. How can I do this and can I do it?

Does your generator output DC?

If your generator is 230v one with a DC output as well then I’m afraid that the DC output will be worse than useless.

Yes it says 12v car socket output

Sorry how is that helpful?

A 12v socket will typically support a maximum of 10A throughput, so not really worth the effort (which is most likely what Julian is referring to above). You’d be lucky to get 8A of charging out of the XS. Then, you’d have further issues in establishing a common negative return path between your leisure battery and the DC output of the generator.
Far better to just plug in an AC-to-DC charger to the AC output of your generator and charge that way.

The Orion XS is a battery-to-battery charger, so is designed to be connected to your start battery on the input and your leisure battery on the output, to charge while running your engine.

You will be lucky to see a couple of amps out of it.
Simpler and more efficient to use a 230v charger from the generator.

Ok thanks. I have a new victron DC to DC charger 50amp but can’t get it to work on my new van. I tried it on my new van and it works fine. But for some reason it won’t work on my new van. So I don’t know what to ddo with it. It’s brand new and can’t see why it’s not working on new van. Hence why I was thinking how I can make use of it.
