Can I install a Victron 12/1200/50-16 120V horizontally?

Hello, and sorry if this has been asked before, but I could not find any direct answer to this question for my Multiplus model.

I’m asking specifically about the Multiplus 12/1200/50-16 120V VE.Bus model: can it be wall mounted horizontally / sideways?

Even though the user manual does not explicitly forbid wall mounting horizontally, several user manuals for other Multiplus models explicitly allow horizontal installation, for example:

The MultiPlus is suitable for wall mounting. For mounting purposes, a hook and two holes are provided at the back of the casing (see appendix G). The device can be fitted either horizontally or vertically. For optimal cooling, vertical fitting is preferred

Should I interpret the lack of specific information as to mean that this device should not be installed horizontally?

Hi Gustavo, welcome to the Victron forum!

The MPII has a vertical airflow design with fan, and heat goes up, so it’s advised to install the MPII vertically also. But it’s not a hard rule, as long as minimal needed airflow is guaranteed.

I know that the Explorist Life channel on YouTube has an episode where they show a horizontal positioned MP in a closed cabinet part of a RV, and how they secure the ventilation.

In my case I’ve installed the MPII on the ground in a closed space under one of the couch seats of the RV. To secure ventilation, I’ve installed a ventilation grille on one side low, and a fan with simple thermostat on the opposite side high, so that rising heat will be blown out.

Hi Theo, thanks for your response!

I think I found the episode you mention:

Their multiplus model seems to be the 12/2000/80-50 120V. Its user manual also does not mention horizontal mounting: it is neither explicitly allowed or forbidden. So perhaps it could be extrapolated to my case as well.

So far, I am leaning towards giving the horizontal mounting a try. I will still wait a couple more days so someone from this forum could warn me of a potential issue with this configuration (besides ensuring proper ventilation, as you pointed out), otherwise I will go ahead with my installation.

It will derate due to heat build up, so if you can live with that, then yes go horizontal.

Inherently vertical is best, but many like myself have mounted them horizontal due to size restrictions.

Biggest thing is to make sure you have adequate ventilation in the area, as heat is an issue regardless of the mounting orientation. Make sure you have plenty of room for the exhausted hot air to move away from the unit!
