Boat Electrical Grounding: 230V + AGM- + LifePO4- to Same Ground?

Here is a write up on earthing on boats from someone involved in marine equipment supply.

I have copied some key points below. The major recreational craft regulations in both the EU and the USA require this.

The AC electrical system earth should be bonded to the hull because:-

1. The European Recreational Craft Directive says so.

2. The British Marine Electronics Association “Code of Practice” says so.

3. The book “The Boatowners Electrical and Mechanical Manual” by Nigel Calder (a world renowned expert) says so.

4. The ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) recommends so.

“Now there are two ways we can answer this question. Some people will not believe a technical argument, perhaps because they don’t understand it, perhaps because their interpretation of technical matters is incorrect. And for those people we will answer the question like this:(see previous post from @pwfarnell )”

Great stuff :folded_hands::rocket::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

OK, great thanks for clarifying that again. So I’m on the right path already (big sigh of relief!) I think I just got confused by those other posts by Jan which I frankly didn’t fully understand.

And thanks for cleaning up the thread.

No offense Jan, I’m easily confused on matters of electricity :slight_smile:

No I was being a complete d@&$. Just wondering how a simple understanding is being questioned by someone considering to self instal.

Well I’m glad I asked everything that I have, because every time I have learned something unexpected. There’s a lot of knowledge in this forum! And I don’t want to assume anything when it comes to electrical. For example, with normal AC, both positive and neutral are basically taking turns at being positive. Until you connect the ground to the neutral then the (positive) neutral wire becomes actual neutral. I would have never thought in a million years that it’s actually correct in some cases to ground an otherwise positive wire! Live and learn :slight_smile:

Also when it comes to boats pretty much everybody is a do it yourselfer because any kind of work on a boat is so ridiculously expensive, and because most people want to know how everything on their boat works before they go to sea. So they’ll DIY just to learn, so if something critical breaks at sea they can fix it themselves and not have to call mayday every time :wink:

And because so many people represent a solar panel + LifePO4 upgrade to be a simple easy weekend project, and don’t even get me started on that one…
