Hi, I currently have the BMV-712 smart shunt installed on my auxiliary battery box in my Ute canopy. The red positive lead is currently connected to the midi fuse bus (supply form battery), not the battery terminal itself. I’ve just ordered the temperature sensor for this, and noticed the instructions has both the positive and negative connections at the battery terminals. I’m guessing the temperature sensor itself is on the negative terminal connection?, so I’ll definitely connect this lug onto the battery negative terminal, however, is the positive ok to stay where it is on the positive supply bus and not at the battery terminal? Thanks.
As I understand it, the BMV temp sensor has a dual function: it replaces the fused battery positive cable (B1) and it adds an 150kOhm NTC (between B1 and B2) all in one package. The BMV will know how to make sense of that when temperature input is selected in the settings. Reason to connect to the positive battery terminal is simply to get the best representative battery temperature reading.
Could you screenshot those instructions? They don’t make sense (no pun) to me.
See page 9 of the manual https://www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/BMV-712_Smart/9172-Manual_BMV_and_SmartShunt-pdf-en.pdf
I don’t see any connections from the temperature sensor to battery negative there. That picture is correct.
Sorry, not sure where I saw this, but looking at the BMV instructions as above, there is no negative connection, just the lug on the positive as mentioned above.
One more question, with the battery temp sensor installed, will it still monitor battery voltage? Cheers
Yes
Cool thanks. Also, is the sensor lug an M8 or M10 diameter hole? My battery has an M8 terminal.
It’s all described in the manual:
