Bmv-712 shows wrong current

Hi all! Thanks in advance for the help.

installed Orion xs50, bmv-712 and 2xLipofe4 12V 30AH parallel batts.

For some reason the Shunt display shows very wrong current. (6times less than what XS50 shows)

I checked crimps, voltage drop and clamp metered current. Everything seems fine but the monitors still doesn’t show the right values. Zero calibration of the current didn’t help either. Any help is appreciated!

The classic reason that crops up time and time again in a boat or vehicle is the chassis / hull ground is connected to the domestic battery negative terminal that is being charged by the Orion, hence the charge current for the domestic batteries does not go through the BMV 712 shunt. The chassis / hull ground MUST be attached to the system side of the BMV712 shunt.

There is a FAQ in the DIY section covering this.

Looks to me that the alternator shouldn’t be connected straight through to the DC loads. Connect alternator to battery negative only. Shunt battery negative one side, DC loads the other.

@CRuMbS CRuMbSthe drawing is correct, the BMV only measures what goes in and out of the battery, your proposal charging from the alternator would not count the charge current from the alternator.

Thanks for your reply.

I checked the connection again (after looking at the post you’ve linked) and can confirm that I only have have one single cable between battery bank and neg side of the shunt (marked battery only) And one single cable from Load to the car chassis.

GND cable from Orion xs50 goes also straight to the chassis.

Loads go straight to chassis.

Something is not adding up.

Highly unusual, I know see the clamp meter on the shunt wire so with no other connections that is all the shunt is carrying. The only other cause of odd readings I have come across is poor connections on the cable between the shunt and the display, the Bluetooth comes from the display so tuat also reads wrong. Try and keep the interconnecting cable away from other wiring and check the plugs and sockets. If no change then contact your supplier.

@pwfarnell You are correct - pre coffee🤔

Thank you for your help!

I reconnected/checked all the connections, still no luck.

Clamp meter gives the right reading which matches Orion output.

I wanted to try a different utp cable but I didn’t have the right one so the decision is to return the shunt to the supplier.

Cheers !

@Groowla Have you configured the correct shunt current and voltage suitable for your shunt? See points 7.6.5 and 7.6.6 in the manual. Otherwise, you will get incorrect readings
