Hi all. I have DJI power bank connected to starter battery in my van via their dedicated cable. I thought to take advantage of the reverse-charge feature by running my van electrics (lights, fan, diesel heater etc) directly from the starter battery since it’s possible to adjust parameters so rev charge kicks in when it senses a draw above the resting voltage. I would simply run 12v electrics direct out of power bank but this would disable charging the unit from the van battery/alternator
Just for added reassurance I wanted to put the victron battery protect between van starter battery and the fuse board from where I’d wire in the 12v electrics.
Would this be the correct way of installing and/or work at all?
I read that the BP does not support reverse charging although the DJI caps the charge at 300W so perhaps that would be ok?
No, reverse current of any level is not permitted when using a BatteryProtect. It is a unidirectional device, without exception; current must flow from In to Out and any attempt to do the opposite may result in component failure, damage, and/or potentially damage to surrounding components.
Bottom line, if you expect reverse current then do not install a BatteryProtect, full stop.
Ok thanks. being uni directional then it seems I can place the BP between the van starter battery and the auxiliary electrics- lights, fan etc?
Yes, the power bank would be engaged to reverse charge the van starter battery once it senses a draw which goes below the resting voltage (set within the app). But after that, power going to aux electrics will just be one way so surely this can work since the BP would only see power coming from one direction and (hopefully) cut off if it goes below a pre-determined voltage.
So bp would just see a single voltage and surely wouldn’t matter where it came from or how that power is made whether it’s resting battery voltage or being charged from elsewhere i.e. power bank. It’s all just a voltage in the end so I cant see how this wouldn’t work but please correct me if I’m wrong!
As long as they’re separate circuits, that’s fine - one circuit running off to loads through the BatteryProtect, a separate circuit that connects to the DJI unit, that doesn’t run through the BatteryProtect at all.
