Basen-Green 15KWh battery connection to Cerbo-GX fails

Hi,
I have an question you might know the answer to

I have an Basen-Green 15KWh battery. I want it to connect to the Cerbo-GX.
When I connect the Battery to the Cerbo-GX it does not show up.

In the software I configured the battery CAN port for “Victron”

The battery comes with an UTP cable with on one end an RJ45 en at the other end 4 wires.
I’f crimed an RJ45 to the other end of the cable as followed
PIN 4 (CAN-H)-------PIN 7
PIN 5 (CAN-L)--------PIN 8

Connected the cable to the can plug of the battery and the other end in the Cerbo-GX port VE-CAN.
Other port is connected to the terminator.
I’v used this video as reference.
Am I missing something?

Greetings

Although CAN communication is of a differential type, sometimes is better to also have the GND wire connected.

If you set the battery as Victron protocol, then that protocol is 250kbps and you can only connect the battery to VE.CAN port on Cerbo (which you did) and then you must setup the port accordingly in the Cerbo’s VE.Can port config.

You have the alternative to connected on BMS-Can, which is only 500kbps, and in the battery config you must select the protocol as Pylon, because that protocol is 500kbps.

Hi Alex,
I followed you advice and connected the CAN Port of the battery to the BMS-Can of the Cerbo. Changed the battery CAN-Type to “Pylon” Still the Cerbo does not recognise the port. Do I need to terminate the other BMS-Can port on the Cerbo?
Do I need a specific setting changed in the Cerbo for monitoring the battery. I heard somewhere that sometimes you need to install drivers.

Where can I change the Cerbo’s VE.Can port configuration.
I know the menu of the Cerbo from the top of my head

Thanks for helping.

Usually at Cerbo’s end you need to terminate the CAN network, bar the situation where you daisy chain another device.

No, you don’t need to change anything in Cerbo for monitoring the battery. All work out of the box, at least for BMS-Can port. For the VE.Can port, you need to configure the profile.
At least this is how it was for me, for a Pylontech battery: connected the battery to BMS-Can in one of the connectors, terminated the other connector and that’s it.

Settings for Cerbo’s CAN ports:
Settings → Services → VE.Can port
Settings → Services → BMS-Can port

Please also connect:
PIN 7 (GND) Battery ------- PIN 3 (GND) Victron

In other words, the cable should be complete, as follows:
PIN 4 (CAN-H) Battery ------- PIN 7 (CAN-H) Victron
PIN 5 (CAN-L) Battery -------- PIN 8 (CAN-L) Victron
PIN 7 (GND) Battery ------- PIN 3 (GND) Victron

Also verify that indeed the pin4 and pin5 from their cable reach the pin7 and pin8 of the Cerbo’s side.
CAN-H wire was solid blue or solid green? Because on their docs is a little bit confusing…

The cable that came with the battery was a bit wanky. So I’f created a new one.

When I look at the port statistics of the VE.Can port. It shows some port errors.

I’f changed the VE.Can port profile to CAN-bus BMS LV (500 kbits/s)
Still no luck

Then try’d the BMS-Can port on the Cerbo. Then re-configured the battery CAN type to pylon.
Upon clicking on the set button the Cerbo restarted. When it came back still no luck.
I can see that the Cerbo is sending data to the port but is not receiving anything.
That would be understandable because the cable was not made for pylon.

I’m absolutely sure the cable is correct made with the screenshot you provided.

kant victron: Pin 8 CAN-L / Pin 7 CAN-H / Pin 3 GND
kant Basen green: Pin 4 CAN-L / Pin 5 CAN-H / Pin 7 GND
ook heb ik de dipswitch allemaal uit staan.
hoop dat het nu wel lukt.
Mvg. Frank

Hi,
I am Dutch and think this is also a issue for more Basengreen user therefore I answer in English.
I was also struggling with the setup / connection and you point me in the right direction.
But I think Frank you make a small mistake / typo. I think on the Basengreen the pin 4 is CAN-H instead of CAN-L (and 5 is L) similar to the documentation and answer of Alex.
I made a new cable with the earth connection and use the BMS-Can bus with a terminator on the other port. And finally it works. (I was also busy with the VE-can port and that doesn’t work. ) Thanks for your contribution.
(of topic can you change in the BMS software the ah settings default is 280Ah?)

Hi Reinoud,

You are right CAN-H Pin 4 and CAN-L Pin 5 on the basengreen side.
(of topic yes you can just use the software of basen green go to config tab and enter the password at the bottom right.
password: 888888 )

Have you set the pins like this?

Yes

I had the same problem and in the end it worked by connecting the cable to port 1 of the ve-can and not to 3 which is the most convenient, so try changing port

Hi Alex, Frank, Reinoud, and Luke
You right, English is better, Sometime is the communication in native language is easier to read and to understand.

Thank you all for helping me. The Cerbo is now able to read the battery.
The frustrating  part is that I don’t actually know what I change differently compared to my other try’s. But it works  It is now connected from the CAN port of the battery to the BMS-can port 1 with a terminator in port 2 (Like Alex & Reinoud Suggested). The Cerbo Can-bus has the following profile “CAN-bus BMS LV (500 kbit/s)”

May be I forgot the terminator, Or had the cable in the wrong rotation connected. :
It feels good to know there are other :low_battery:BasenGreen :low_battery: users around

Again thanks for your help. Much appreciated

Greetings
Bavo
