Avoid charging battery with DG when PV is present

the client is asking to Update system settings to avoid batteries to be charged charged from the generator when PV is available. is this something we can do from the VRM ? if not, what are the steps to take on to solve this?

Please share more information about the system, that would make it easier to help.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your response.

The system configuration is as follows:

  • 3 × Victron Quattro 15kVA (3-phase setup)

  • 2 × Fronius Symo 20.0-3-M

  • 17 × BYD Battery-Box Premium Flex Lite 5kWh modules

The equipment is integrated into a containerized energy system supplying a petrol station in Kinshasa, DRC.

The site is:

  • Grid-connected

  • Equipped with a diesel generator (DG) as backup

  • Operating under ESS

We are experiencing an issue where the battery bank charges from the generator even when sufficient PV production is available. Our objective is to prioritize PV charging and prevent generator-based charging whenever solar production is adequate.

We would appreciate guidance on the correct ESS and AC input configuration to achieve this behavior.

OK, so this is an ESS type problem, being 100% off grid, this is something I have only a little experience of. However, I would have thought that the site would only use diesel if the batteries were very low.
