Hi everyone, I wanted to ask for some feedback on our current use of languages on the community.
Currently we silo categories based on language, with sections for German, French and Spanish/Portugese combined.
We offer an on-demand translation button on posts that uses a fairly old translation engine, which is not very accurate at translating.
The platform now offers us the ability to automatically translate the community, using a more capable LLM, based on the localisation you have set on your profile. This is something that can improve engagement on topics.
As one size never fits all, you will have the choice to individually choose what languages you are comfortable with and the site will not translate those.
You can also choose what categories it can apply to, or just disable it altogether.
We are considering providing this for English, Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portugese and Turkish.
Any translated content will be marked as such and the original text easily displayed.
I don’t know, I make use to translate French, Dutch and the occasional Spanish post on here but am perfectly fine to do so manually and also imho the old translators quality is pretty OK… so.. dunno, shrug?

If it aids with communication, how could it be a bad thing? Thank you for enabling the feature.
Thanks @OGPS I was looking at the first topic of a new user (non-English) and different languages all coming together seamlessly in a conventionally English section. IMO better than splitting into different silos, especially for language groups that aren’t in a majority and often lack the engagement of other groups.
We have a few hiccups being ironed out by the platform provider where some posts either refuse to translate or take some time to appear. Should hopefully be resolved soon. For the most part the majority of posts are translated into 8 languages shortly after they are made.
Most of the kinks are ironed out and topics are generally translating within a minute of a post. It has been great to read multilingual topics and see multiple people with different languages collaborating.

We support 8 languages, so every post is automatically translated into the remaining 7 languages.
You will see every comment in your chosen language localisation. The exception being adding other languages that you understand to your localisation settings, these won’t be translated.
Depending on load and complexity a post is usually translated in a minute.
If you edit it, this is bumped to 5 minutes.
Your post as an example (you can just change your language at the top localisation menu selector to see it another language).
