I am just in the progress of gradually switching my mind to the new GUI for controlling three Victron systems of different complexity. And as a software engineer myself, I would like to share a few thoughts about the new GUI.
Awesome:
- the speed, especially over a slow remote connection (cannot emphasize that point enough!)
- the clear and concise look of the “Overview”, the bars and graphs inside the device boxes
- the “Control panel” - just nice and reduced to exactly the right amount of detail control
- the new organization of settings
- the choice to allow both GUIs to run at the same time
Fair:
- my mind is still missing the different colors of the devices for getting oriented in milliseconds, especially when same-type devices are placed in different locations on different systems. Even a slight touch of colouring would help and would IMHO not mess the design too much.
- hiding the control buttons after a few seconds and shifting the position of GUI elements that are subject to touch control. The elements move always one microsecond before the finger hits the glass and you miss what you wanted to touch. May be a an option to keep the buttons visible permanently? Alternatively, just overlay them without shifting the rest.
Missing:
- keyboard control, especially in a web browser. I really used that a lot with the old GUI, especially when configuring the system
- getting back to main view with a single click from everywhere (ESC button previously)
