Victron DC to DC Charger Options

Hi All, i’m looking to change my boat from lead-acid to lithium for house batteries.

My house alternator is a Bosch 12v 120amp 012 048 427 model, it doesnt have an internal regulator. It goes to a MASTERVOLT Alpha Pro I (doesnt support lifepo4) then into batteries. It charges my 300ah of lead acid at 100amps easily.

Im looking at a Victron Orion XS 50A DC-DC unit, some info I’ve read is says it can go straight off a alternator (smart) but some say any type of alternator.

Would the Victron DC to DC support going of my bosch alterantor, or would it work connecting to the MASTERVOLT or would I need a donky leadacid for the house which it connects to, then into the lithiums?

thanks heaps,

nic

You must have a lead acid on the output of the alternator to buffer the voltage response. People who have not used the lead acid buffer battery report large voltage cycling.

In your situation I would consider swapping the Alpha Pro 1 for the Alpha Pro 3 as that supports lithium. Alternatives that can communicate with a Victron GX device are a Wakespeed WS500 or Arco Zeus. These 3 options would allow better utilisation of your alternator.
