Hello,
I’ve got an RV with Victron components and lithium battery, I would like to turn off/on the smart solar charger by the app. but it’s written that it should be used “only for service actions”.
My question is: will it be damaged by doing so?
Your question is very interesting. I’ll be following the progress of this topic…
If a solar panel is placed directly in the sun without connecting it to any device, it should generate energy that I don’t know how it would dissipate. It would surely be damaged over time.
You can ignore that remark and disable it as long as you want.
@fer If solar panels are open circuit (not connected to anything) then they do not produce any power. The voltage at the terminal rises to the absolute maximum so the panel is live, but there is no current flow, so no power so nothing needs to be dissipated. This is a common misconception, similar to the similar one that says “my panels can produce 1000W, my battery is only taking 500W, the MPPT must be dissipating the other 500W”. This is wrong, the MPPT forces the panel voltage higher than the optimum voltage (maximum power voltage) towards the absolute maximum (open circuit voltage), reducing the current / power being harvested so the panel only produces what is required.
