SUNBLOCKS - 21kW mobile power station

Hi Victron community!

I wanted to start a post that hopefully will end with some really nice pictures of our project.

The SUNBLOCKS project is currently still in early development stage - but we are ready to move fast to build our first ‘block’…

The aim of this project is to design a pv powered bitcoin mining installation that can be shipped and installed anywhere - to the best sunny locations - all inside a 10 foot shipping container.

Bitcoin mining involves using specialized ASIC computers to solve complex math problems. Every 10 minutes the winner recieves 3.125 bitcoins. Each computer running at 100% capacity needs 5676W on a 400v ac three phase supply.

We intend to install 4 of these computers in the shipping container and have calcuated that the overall total power requirement is around 24kw.

It is important to mention that is is possible to ‘downrate’ the power consumption of the computer to match with the available supply. We aim to run the computers ONLY when the sun shines so we will switch them off at night and when weather conditions are not favorable.

The pv installation that we are considering using is as follows:

3 x Victron MPPT RS 450/200 controllers

3 x Victron 48/8000 Quattro inverters (3 phase configuration)

3 x Pylontech 48v 3.5kwh batteries

48 x 48v 450w bifacial panels

We intend to mount this equipment on one wall of the shipping container.

The batteries are not intended to provide capacity to run continuously during the night. They will be used to provide power for monitoring and safe shutdown / restart of the computers, air conditioning inside the container and other low power services (internet connectivity, security lighting etc)

We are now looking to move forward with this project and would welcome any input or suggestions.

Hi i suggest to contact a local victron dealer for system design, 3 8kw quattro can not deliver 24kw all the time, they are 8kva so around 6400w at 25c

See spec sheet

Also for a system that big you reallly need more battery capacity, even if it has to run for a short period

Thanks for the reply @DuivertNL .

Each computer runs at a maximum of 5676W so if we reduce to 3 ASIC units it should be within the power spec.

Also noted your suggestion to increase battery capacity - what would you suggest?

Any ‘local vicron dealers’ who would like to step in to advise on exact requirements?

We would particularly like to hear from anyone who would be prepared to participate in a film that we intend to make of the whole construction process-- zoom calls in the beginning.

Victron Recommended battery for one 8kw inverter is 12kw

Any system designers interested in assisting us? Anywhere in europe preferred…
