Solar and Alternator charging for 500a/50MV smart shunt

Hi there, new to this community and hoping someone can help. I have the smart shunt 500a/50MV connected to a camper trailer using 2 x 100 AGM Batteries. The battery managed by a Projecta IDC 25 for charging from alternator and solar. The shunt doesn’t appear to show solar or alternator charging. However when I plug it into 240 it shows as charging.

I am at a bit of a loss as to what may be causing this issue and would love some help.

Most likely you just have system negatives that are bypassing the shunt, so the shunt can’t read the charge current from them.

Have a read through the FAQ re this condition, and then check/correct the installation as may be necessary!

As Justin has mentioned, the shunt is not wired correctly.
Place the shunt as pictured.

Thank you, I will check and report back

Hi Justin,

I just checked and it showing as you described. Please see photos below.

Oof, okay… are you sure the solar/alternator actually are charging? There’s a lot of problems in those photos, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if fuses were blown (if there are fuses, I don’t see any which is one of the big problems) or something wasn’t making a good connection so that the shunt isn’t registering charge from the alternate sources because there’s simply no charge coming from those sources.

I’d strongly suggest taking that setup back to the installer and having him correct everything -or, likely a better option, taking it to a different installer altogether. There are more than a few incorrect and/or actually dangerous things there that should be corrected before any meaningful troubleshooting is going to be possible.

Thanks Justin,

I just checked through the wiring and checked voltage. There must be something loose and when I checked again I moved I got a charge coming through which is great. The original wiring set up was done by the manufacturer. I DIY the shunt. So probably my bad. Appreciate your input now… gotta find what’s loose.

Honestly man, that original wiring is no good either, really, so it’s a solid chance the issue is the factory… the batteries aren’t paralleled correctly, there’s no main fuse at the batteries, the other connections look dodgy as balls… I’d drive that back to the factory and have a good shout at them if that’s an option in any way!

Ok I did see a couple of fuses there. Maybe hard to tell from the pics. I bought it second hand so no comeback for factory. Have you got suggestions to the battery config?
