SmartSolar Controller Stuck in Float Mode when Battery is low

My Smart Solar 100 50 worked perfectly the first day. Then I turned it off and disconnected my whole system to leave the house for two days. Plugged everything back in and now my controller is staying on float even though my inverter is reading 22.9 for my batteries.

Could the problem be that the controller is currently set to 12V? I believe the batteries are 12V but the reading on the inverter is centering around a 24V baseline - maybe because they’re hooked up in cells of two? I have six total. That’s the only thing I can think–that it reset or something when I shut it down and restarted it. They’re deep cycle marine batteries, but I think they’re only 12V. I usually use an all in one inverter, I just switched to using a charge controller for the PV to the batteries.

The system faults out at 22.1. Full charge is 24 (usually they’ll go up to 27-28 reading on generator or strong solar). Am I missing something? First day it ran 5 hours Abs and 2 Float. Ran the batteries up to 25+ power, no problem. Now it’s 22.9 with 37V going in from the solar and 13.8 trickling out

I disconnected and reconnected everything multiple times. I have no clue what to do.

You do not state what charge controller you have so we can not give specific advice.2.

Generic advice.

  1. Some controllers auto detect voltage but also have a setting such as auto/12V/24V/48V. It is best to set this to 24V to avoid the problem you have.
  2. When turning on a controller turn on the battery first then the panels and when turning off a controller, turn off the panels first then the battery. If you turn them on and off in the wrong order and have auto detect voltage it can cause your problem.

I updated the post with additional information. I’m just nervous about changing over the setting to 24V if that will damage my batteries. Thank you so much!

I have reread your post again, it sound like you have a 24V system and if that is the case then you need to set the MPPT to 24V. What voltage does your inverter read at night when the MPPT is not working. If it is 22 to 25V then you need to set the MPPT to 24V. If the batteries are 12V but you have 2 in series the effective voltage is 24V. Post a photo of your batteries showing the wiring or find someone to have a look at them.

Amazing. I’ll post a photo after I get home. Seriously thank you for your help!
