Remote console data via local WiFi?

I use VRM and the remote console (GUIv2 now, much better!) often when away from the boat for remote monitoring, but also sometimes use the remote console (and VRM) while on the boat (on a smartphone) so the steerer can see what’s going on – the Touch50 display is inside the boat.

When I do this I assume the data transfer is phone – WiFi – network – VRM portal – network – WiFi – phone, which works fine so long as there is network access (though it does consume data allowance). However sometimes there isn’t any network – and there never is inside a tunnel! – which means this doesn’t work.

Is there any reason (at least, in theory) why the remote console needs to do the Wi-Fi – network – VRM portal – network – WiFi hop, instead of just using the local WiFi? (or even Bluetooth could work, I guess).

Or am I missing something and this is possible anyway if I configure the remote console properly?

I guess VRM always goes via the network so it can access history data, though the realtime access shouldn’t need this and could (in theory) also stay local – but this would presumably need a major change to the VRM app?

Console is accessible on your local wifi/LAN, just browse to venus.local as the url.
There is a section about this in the manual.

Thanks Nick – I’ll do that next time I’m on board. I suspected there was a way…
