Orion XS DC-DC Battery Charger - shows 0A on output

Hi,

I have an issue with my Orion XS 12/12-50A in a campervan setup.

Vehicle: 2016 Toyota Hiace (1KD-FTV)

House battery: 2× Remco LiFePO₄ 100Ah (parallel, internal BMS)

Monitor: SmartShunt IP65 300A

VE.Smart networking: enabled (voltage + current from shunt)

Batteries charge correctly from the AC charger and solar.

Problem

When the engine is running:

• Orion switches between Bulk → Absorption → Float

• Sometimes all 3 LEDs blink briefly

• Output voltage rises (14.5–15.0 V)

Output current always stays at 0.0 A

• House battery SOC ~68% (not full) on SmartShunt

Starter battery voltage ~13.8–14.0 V (confirmed by multimeter).

Settings (tested many combinations)

Battery (user-defined):

• Absorption 14.2 V

• Float 13.4 V

• Storage 13.5 V

Engine shutdown detection tested with:

• Smart alternator (12 V)

• User-defined

Typical values tested:

• Start 13.4–13.6 V

• Delayed start 13.2–13.3 V (120 s)

• Shutdown 12.8–13.1 V

Remote on/off is connected to the ignition.

Observations

• Orion never delivers charging current

• Voltage rises but current = 0 A

• Behaviour is unstable between charge stages

• SmartShunt confirms battery is not full

Questions

  1. Can high resting starter voltage (~13.9 V) confuse engine detection?

  2. Can VE.Smart voltage sensing cause Float with 0 A even when SOC < 90%?

  3. Should engine shutdown detection be disabled when ignition remote on/off is used?

  4. Is Float with 0 A normal before the battery is actually full?

Thanks for any advice.

Solved!

I changed both Starter Batt (+) → Orion XS IN and Starter Batt (-) → SmartSchunt (LOAD), and it works!

The old cables were replaced with new ones because the cable resistance caused the voltage to fluctuate, leading Orion XS to think the batteries were fully charged.
