I just received my MultiPlus-II GX inverter and started it up with only AC IN connected (the batteries haven’t arrived yet). The inverter seems to be working, however, the LCD display remains off. Is this normal behavior when no batteries are connected yet, or should it always be working? Thanks in advance!
As has been said many times before, please do not start a multi without a battery.
It is not designed to do that, it is unsupported and you may inadvertently damage somewhere voiding your warranty in the process.
Nowhere in the manual does it permit this and it is clear the steps to follow when commissioning it - which includes a battery.
As per the wiring, the GX is a DC powered device. That it isn’t on should be an indication to not continue.
Thanks for the quick response!
Since the battery packs will take a while to arrive and the box seemed to have been opened upon delivery, I wanted to verify that the system was not defective.
Since the device does come online, I will store it away for now and assume that the display will work as soon as a battery is connected.
You could try use a suitable DC power supply if you have one available. Your warranty isn’t going to lapse in a few weeks, and hopefully you took some photos of the open box for backup.
If the GX was AC powered (docs advise against this for standalone versions) you would not be able to use it when turning off the inverter.
I guess it’s just the ribbon cable going to the display.
You think (or know?) it should work on AC IN only?
These answers are a bit confusing for new users victron experts @nickdb @M_Lange
As nick said, only run it from battery or a big enough DC power supply, nothing wrong with the ribbon cable (edit:) probably
I think what Matthias is trying to say, is that if the multi starts from grid, as much as the internal GX is DC powered, the inverter/charger should power that bus, if everything is operating fine.
In which case, there is a cable that powers the display from the internal controller.
You would need to open the case to check.
Or you could insert a LAN cable and confirm if it links or not.
There is also a reset button for the card if it did not boot correctly.
It still remains that these devices should not be started only with grid, it puts undue stresses on the relays and is generally a no-no.
What I meant is that the ribbon cable to the display could be loose or not connected at all.
@nickdb @M_Lange
your both answers a right off course!
First connect it to dc power supply, still no display,?: check the ribbon cable (not the first loose one in a new unit)
The ribbon cable was actually disconnected.
