I am having an issue with my Victron Multiplus II ( 48/5000/70-95 120 ), which started after upgrading my firmware.
The main issue is that it cannot be turned on under battery power, nor will it swap over to inverter mode.
It is able to turn on under mains power. When mains power is on, it is able to charge the battery, but it will no longer switch over to Inverter mode.
I checked the settings after my firmware update and everything looks fine (settings were the same as before). Previously I was on Firmware 552.
The reason i upgraded the firmware is because i upgraded my battery bank from a 48v 100ah to a 48v 200ah configuration, and since i needed to disconnect my system, it felt like a great time to do it.
My initial thought was that maybe I somehow made a mistake when adding the new batteries, but I can’t find any problems with it, the Victron smart shunt is showing the correct voltage. To be extra sure it is not a battery configuration issue, i hooked up my Victron phoenix 48v/1200va inverter to the battery bank and it fired up with no problems, I ran a load on it for about 30 min and no problem at all.
With that said, here are the settings of my multiplus which i screenshotted from my phone while connected through the usb/ve.bus cable. If anyone has any ideas i’m all ears.
Hi @Sathen ,
did you run VE.Configure afterwards and reapplied all your settings from before? Without VE.Configure setup you won’t have any ESS functionality.
OP doesnt mention any ESS, so no need to use VE.config if theres no assistants.
The update through VictronConnect also reapplies the settings. Since we see VC screenshots i guess the update was done through that as well.
Whats your complete setup, do you use a VE.bus BMS, a Cerbo or a remote switch? If you switch the inverter to On through the physical switch on the unit, then nothing happens? Have you checked DC voltage on the terminals of the MP? On the first screenshot its in absorption mode but no current flows, so my guess is a blown fuse or some other issue. Its also in charger only mode in this screenshot, so its normal that it shuts down as soon as ACin is removed
Hey darktooth, I updated my multiplus using victron connect with the mk3 ve.bus usb cable attached. After the update completed my previous settings were restored.
Hey @chrigu , my complete setup right now is the Multiplus II, a victron smart shunt, and the raspberry pi flavor of the cerbo gx. All of which are now recently updated to the latest firmware. Physically i have the switch to the on position. If i flip it to off it does shut down, if i flip it to on it does turn on. I can also change modes from the VRM portal (while the physical switch is in the on position) on/off/charger only, any time i change to inverter it eventually registers as charger only. I have checked voltage at the terminals on the multiplus and at the time it read 56.8v, i have also seen it actively charge the batteries at 1500 watts for a few min when i first connected the new bank.
I do have it wired directly into my electrical panel using 6/3 cable. I am not connecting to the case ground because the manual said it would use ground from the grid wires (i did temporarily add a ground to the multiplus case ground but it made no difference) I’m going to try completely disconnect AC in to see if maybe this is some type of grounding issue. Currently i have neutral and ground going to the same bus bar (which should be fine because it’s the main panel where neutral and ground should be bonded), and of course live is going into my 50 amp breaker. I’m wondering if it is a fuse too, are there fuses inside the mutliplus that can be replaced fairly easily?
also you are correct, i am not using ESS (and don’t want to), I did do my update through VictronConnect and the settings did get re-applied.
That is interesting, but ive never came across such a behavior myself. Have you tried with the VE.bus cable disconnected from the Cerbo/RaspberryPi? Sounds like the Cerbo is actively changing to charger only, but by disconnecting it you could seperate if its the inverter alone or the cerbo doing this
Hey thanks for the reply, I have disconnected the usb cable and tried to control it from the victron connect app directly. I get the same behavior, it will act like it’s switching over to inverter, but it never does, and after a few min or so it will show that it’s on charger only mode. Basically, whether i am connected directly to the multiplus from my phone, or through the cerbo, or from the victron VRM portal, i get the same behavior.
@lxonline You were right i had the physical switch on battery charger only. I thought i was switching it to the on position this whole time. For the last 2 years this multiplus has been laying on a foldout table and in that position i was used to flipping it up. Now that it’s mounted on the wall and oriented in a different way I need (at least in my mind) flip it down.
Thank you and to everyone who took the time to reply, what a relief and wow do i feel like a bonehead! lol
