Hi. I have an 150/70 Victron Mppt solar controller. I am adding more solar panels to my boat’s solar array. Making it potentially a maximum of 100amps. my question is this…if the solar was producing 100 amps would the controller waste the excess [30amps] without any damage to the controller. Ie. Maximum delivered to the batteries being 70 amps. Or would the controller suffer?
No damage when over panelling unless you break the two main rules.
Rule 1.
At minimum temperature your panels voc must never exceed 150volts
Rule 2
The parallel strings ISC must never exceed the short circuit amps of the charge controller. 50A for the 150/70
It will get warm but otherwise be ok. In all honesty though the likelihood of you getting the full potential out of the panels alot of the time in real world conditions is less than you think.

It is a misunderstanding that the MPPT wastes the excess energy, if the panels can produce more power than required / allowed, the MPPT increases the panel voltage above the maximum power voltage, which reduces the power output of the panels to match required / allowed power.
