The safety instructions that came with my IP22 says, “Locate the charger as far away from the battery as the DC cables permit. Never place the charger above battery being charged, gases from battery will corrode and damage the charger.”
Does this warning apply if I ONLY have LiFeP04 batteries?
I have a 5th wheel travel trailer that has a vented battery storage area. I want to place my IP22 near but not on top of the LiFeP04 batteries in that area but I also don’t want to ignore the warnings.
Hi Bill.
Yes that warning assumes a worst-case scenario. The mention of ‘gases’ is a clue. Without them you should be fine locating your kit closer. But commonsense still rules. Stay safe pal…
From my Internet research it seems that under normal operation, LiFePO4 batteries do not produce hydrogen or other potentially hazardous gases. Consequently, the ventilation requirements for LiFePO4 batteries are typically minimal or even non-existent.
In the unlikely event of thermal runaway or damage to the LiFeP04, then essentially all bets are off.
It also appears that a Battery Management System (BMS) is an essential safety feature to monitor and manage the battery.
