I am wondering what’s the point of connecting our systems to the internet? Is it just comfort function to keep us updated with the information of our system’s performance throughout the day when we are away or it actually does have some important function as well?
- The data is stored for 6 months at 1 minute intervals in the VRM cloud if you need to go back and check something. The data can be downloaded so you have a permanent record.
- You can control your system remotely, especially if you are away for long periods, boats moored in marinas, forest cabins, industrial equipment etc.
- You can set up alarms to be delivered by email or as phone notifications. For mobile systems you can fit a GPS and geofence.
- Victron can troubleshoot your system remotely.
- You can upgrade firmware or equipment settings remotely.
There is probably more stuff that I do not use as well.

There is even more. E.g. weather and production forecast by VRM, DESS, etc…
To counter balance: for core functionality, ie. convert DC to AC and back, and provide a reliable power supply: no internet needed.
VRM is completely optional, as long as you don’t want to use dynamic ESS.
