Similar disappointment here aswell. Everthing else Victron that I have works so well. Constant drop outs of the EVCS. Unifi dedicated vlan and 2.4ghz wifi . EVCS connected to wifi but can not ping.

Do we all see a pattern here?

It should not be this hard or complex.

So many people having problems with their EVCS wifi connection whilst everthing else works well with existing networks.

I too will be spending way more time on this to fix it than I was originally expecting.

Are you guys sure that it is a non-mesh router you are using? What’s the make and model? I also had an exclusive 2.4Ghz network, but it was till unstable. I am convinced that the problem for these chargers is the mesh functionality.

Hi all,
I have been away for two weeks. I left the EVCS in a working state when I left. I checked if it was still working using VRM over the last two weeks and everything seemed to be okay however that was without a vehicle being plugged in and the charger operating.

I arrived home yesterday and plugged in my EV. The charger was set to schedule the charging starting at midnight. After plugging in the vehicle, I was still able to communicate with the EVCS.

This morning the vehicle is showing a full charge however the EVCS is no longer communicating at all either with VRM or directly on the local network.
Clearly, it operated fine for two weeks as long as the EVCS did not actually turn on the charging power. As soon as charging was started, the device communications fails.

I think there is a case for suspecting RF interference from the high charging currents causing WiFi comms to be impacted, and the EVCS simply gives up.
Last night I was charging at 10A. Today I will go around the loop and get things running again, then tonight will charge at 6A (the lowest I can go) and see if that makes any difference.

Do others see this correlation between failing communications and active charging?

normaly there is no corelartion. But you can test it, just manualy start/stop the charging station few times.

Ok, two more test cases.

Last night I charged at the minimum rate of 6A overnight and the EVCS was working fine in the morning.

Later this afternoon I charged the car again, this time at 16A since I had excess solar. The car charged fully, however the EVCS was comms-dead at the end of the charge cycle.

So now I have:
Charging at 10A, EVCS FAILS
Charging at 6A, EVCS DOES NOT FAIL
Charging at 16A, EVCS FAILS

My next test will be to charge again at 6A to try and verify the non-failure. If it doesn’t fail again at 6A, then I plan to increase the charge current by 1A each day and see where it starts to fail.

I have now also found a simple method to get the EVCS running again which is to reboot using the BT interface. After a few minutes the Cerbo GX finds the EVCS on ModBus and everything works again without having to reboot the router or Cerbo.

Will post again after more testing.

After charging overnight yesterday at 16A the EVCS was failed/offline in the morning.
I rebooted it in the morning and it came back online. The car remained plugged in all day and when I checked in the evening the EVCS had again failed. (No charging, just connected).

I rebooted the EVCS again and plugged the car in for overnight scheduled charging.
This morning the car had not charged and the EVCS was offline again. I suspect it went offline again prior to the charging schedule commencing.

So, as Lucian indicated, there is no direct correlation between charging power and failure.

Noting that the EVCS operated online perfectly for two weeks while I was interstate, the only thing I’ve been able to prove is that the EVCS stays online and communicates with the GX as long as you don’t plug a car into it.

Is there a software solution to this problem? I heard talk of MQTT?

I don’t think there is any correlation with the connected car or charging, it is because of router settings or incompatibily.

If I don’t plug the car into the EVCS then it does not fail,. In my testing so far, it only fails when the car is plugged in. It stayed online for more than two weeks while I was interstate and since I returned a few days ago and started plugging the car into it, the failures have been thick and fast.

Is this the behaviour that you expect with a router/settings problem?

I will test this again by charging from an alternative source for a few days.and see what happens.

At this stage I have no reliable configuration that works when I charge my car. Is there something you can suggest that will make this device work reliably. For example, can it just be turned on like a regular/dumb power outlet without needing to communicate with the GX? If that’s possible I can use the car app to manually schedule charging cycles until the comms issue is properly fixed.

There are tens of thousands of units not experiencing similar issues. The only issues are with some router brands, especially with mesh configuration.

What do you suggest I do?

I don’t remember, what kind of router you are using? If it’s UNIFI, ca you install a different brand, one that is less complicated?
I’m using Mikrotik and there are not issues with it, but most of the others are working perfectly.

It’s a TP Link Deco BE25. I went through all the tweaking with Nicolas earlier in this thread.
I need to use a mesh system for coverage so I cannot change the house to a single point router.

Is there a known hack to add a single point router to the mesh system so that the EVCS will operate reliably?

I tried some other things before adding another router to the system. One of them seems to have worked as follows:

I had the EVCS previously locked to one of the mesh router nodes to prevent it from roaming, but that in itself did not solve the disconnection problem. (I also had the CerboGX wifi connection locked to the same mesh node).

A few days ago I wired the CerboGX LAN connection physically to that same node and have disabled the WiFi on the CerboGX so that it only operates via the LAN/ethernet, via the mesh node that the EVCS wifi is locked to.

So far, this seems to be a stable configuration.
