Do I need to have charger connected to a battery before I can power it on to check charging history or do firmware updates? Is it ok to just power it up stand alone?
you need a battery and you can only connect the battery! look in the manual and first of all config the BS before you connect PV.
You can power it up via AC alone and update FW, program, etc. Er, just make sure you don’t have any open DC leads coming out of it, of course - that is, since the IP65 model has the quick-connector on it, make sure you either don’t have any of the extensions (ring terminals, gator clips, etc) connected to it, or that they’re well-protected against shorting out on themselves or anything else once it’s powered on.
…wrong product, the IP65 is an AC-to-DC charger, not a solar controller.
Thanks Justin. Just what I expected but needed some external confirmation. Would be great to see this explained clearly in the product manual.
I suspect that it’s something Victron wouldn’t necessarily want to put in the manual, considering the risks associated with having live DC leads on the output side if you weren’t careful about either not having the quick-connector end hooked up, or having the ends isolated… sometimes it’s better to not mention that a thing could be done, rather than mention that it can be done and risk having people do it wrong and set themselves on fire or whatever ![]()
