DESS - does anybody know how it works?

Asked a couple of times, but no replies, but again, last night, between 00.30 and 05.30, off peak, DESS doesnt charge my battery to 100%, which I want it to, it only does that if I set SOC to 100%, but then it doesnt discharge from the battery and uses grid power at peak rates until I manually make SOC lower. This isnt ideal.

So SOC is set to 60%, as you can see in the charts, it charged up to 60% initially at around 00.30, then stopped charging, then continued charging up to 85% between 04.00 and 05.30,

Now if it charged to 100%, it should then start exporting at peak rate at 05.30, solar kicks in around 08.00 to resume charging the battery, and any excess once the battery is recharged to 100% then gets exported at peak rate (it does that when I manually make sure it charges to 100%).

Is this because I am in green mode rather than trade mode ?

What I want is for the battery to be charged fully in off peak, so I can export at peak rate whenever there is excess available from solar and the battery

DESS has even set to import from the grid in the afternoon at peak time, again, no need for this, the battery should have plenty of energy in it to cover this period, so another cost that shouldnt be there.

And why is this happening now, generating plenty of solar, battery is 88%, house is not consuming much 575w, but its pulling 3.75kW from the grid, at peak price
I have had to turn DESS off to stop the grid draw

How can this be relied on ?

Hi,

DESS takes various cost-factors into account, to determine how much it needs to charge. Generally it considers to leave room for solar, and only charge as much as it thinks to be required.

It also calculates, when Efficency+Battery-Costs makes a charging pointless, but consuming from grid at other hours “is cheaper”.

Green Mode will only charge for expected self-consumption purpose and not as you expect “charge to sell” - that’s what trademode is for.

in VRM, Dess Settings you can enable grid restrictions - also per schedule in a certain time.
So, probably cou want to add a grid2bat restriction for the noon, so DESS won’t charge there anymore?

Do you have battery balancing enabled?
Battery Balancing usually is performed during noon, when the soc is very high, so there is little to pull from grid, AND it will be done, until self-consumption starts in the afternoon.

But in that Case, the DESS-Plan should display a note, saying “Balancing scheduled for today”.
(Occassionally DESS decides on short notice to balance today)

Thanks for reply, I have actually had installed a node red system, so will be trying that out, there is no way, for me anyway, that the Victron DESS is capable of doing what I want it to do.

I do understand that its a generic system that needs to appeal to a vast array of different situations, the saying “jack of all trades - master of non” springs to mind.

So will be testing the node red system I have installed that will give me somewhat more customisation for my own needs that DESS doesnt.

I actually has battery balancing turned off as I wanted to control how and when my batteries were balanced, and essentially charging them up to 100% each night at cheap rate would achieve that anyway.
