Cyrix-Li-ct Without Vicron BMS

Is anyone using Cyrix-Li-ct without Vicron BMS?

I need this for a large RV in which house batteries were converted to Lithium (not Vicron) and I am slowly converting system to Victron. Current battery isolator utilizes intellitec relay and it doesn’t support lithium batteries. The only other option I could find is LI-BIM by Precission Circuts, it promises to solve alternator overload issue, but it is timer based, so I am not convinced.

What are you actually trying to achieve?

3 things (in order of importance).

  1. Ability to use home batteries to help starter if coach batteries are low.
  2. Charge chassis batteries when connected to shore power or when generator is running.
  3. Charge house batteries when engine is running.

Please note for #1 it has to be hated at least 200amp with short term of 600amp.

Also, I don’t really want to over optimize charging, since it is not the main charging for either of the systems.

Have a look at the Orion XS; the firmware for reverse charging has just been completed.

You can limit the charging currents.

Regarding 1.

If the starter battery is in good condition, reverse charging is sufficient. If you connect it directly to the Li battery, a flat lead-acid starter battery could potentially explode, leaving you with an awful acid mess in the battery compartment.

Can you point me to documentation on dual charging?

As for connecting batteries together for a starter. If this is done for 30 sec while under starter load (which pulls between 400 and 600amp), I don’t believe anything would happen.

If the lead-acid battery is discharged or flat due to an internal cell short, the lithium batteries’ low internal resistance will cause a high current to flow for a very short time. However, if internal components of the lead-acid battery are damaged, sparks could occur inside the battery, causing an oxyhydrogen explosion. The acid can also boil and create excess pressure (it doesn’t have to, but it can happen). With lorries, this often happens during jump-starting, with oxyhydrogen gas escaping at those power levels.

The XS’s emergency charging function is brand new (currently in beta testing).

The use case: it is cold outside and engine didn’t start in the first few attempts, but drained the battery. In this case, I want to be able to use house batteries to “assist” main battery. This is not a substitute for failed battery.

But back to Orion XS. Is reverse charge automatic or “emergency” on request only?

Available on request as an emergency function
