Cerbo GX seems dead

I noticed some strange behaviour from my Cerbo GX last months.
From time to time the Cerbo did not respond anymore and had to reboot it. All lights on the Cerbo were off. The frist couple of times booting worked directly, what I noticed later on is that it did not boot all the time directly and had to make it powerless and apply power again. Sometimes it worked after 2 times, last week it took me more then 10 times to be able to boot it again.

From yesterday I am not able to boot it at all. Normally the orange light flashes after a few second you apply power, now nothing anymore.
The ethernet lights do blink when applying power and that’s the only thing I can see. If you look through the 2 leds you can see a tiny red light going on when applying power (think some pcb led power supply)

What did I try yesterday:

  • Keep the device off for an hour to make sure there is no capacity in any capacitors anymore.

  • Add a HDMI display to see any output, nothing to see, screen says no input.

  • Downloaded the recovery image, put it on a usb drive and let it boot again, nothing happened.

  • Downloaded the einstein image, put it on a sd card and let it boot. The orange light blinks but nothing on the HDMI, no network connection. Let do for 30 minutes and rebooted without SD, still nothing.

  • Tried a different voltage (battery is 48V, tried a 12V adapter and 19V adapter).

The device id is HQ2345, if I am correct I do not need to add a capacitor of 100uF on the power lines.

The link to the recovery manual can be found here: 19. Reset to factory defaults and Venus OS reinstall (I tried article 19.1 and 19.2).

What else can I try to fix the Cerbo? For me it seems like the internal memory is corrupt or dead.
I’ve read something about applying a serial cable, does someone know how to do that? I have a ttl to usb converter and some pinheaders.

Really hope someone can help me out.

Hi @Lithium,

There is nothing more to try, please get in touch with your Victron dealer for a warranty RMA.

You didn’t mention if you were running any custom software modifications or anything like that. If you were, I would strongly advise to just run it with stock settings if possible.

Thanks for your quick reply!

That’s a pity to hear. There was one thing I wanted to try is to see if I can get any serial data from the serial port but I guess that’s not worth a try?
The only custom software was the openDTU to get the solar information: GitHub - henne49/dbus-opendtu: Integrate opendtu and ahoy into Victron Energies Venus OS as a pv inverter

Hopefully the RMA will not take that long, the system is sitting still now.

Deep low level documentation for such things is here - Venus OS: Root Access [Victron Energy]

But it’s never expected of any customer that this kind of thing is required, only for those tinkerers that want to. Documentation for how to extract info beyond what is in that link above is limited.

I have knowledge about electronics, connecting the serial to see if there is a connection and try to fix it is not a problem for me. I do need some help with the serial commands to pinpoint the problem.

The output so far is:

I don’t know,

But I would paste that into ChatGPT and it will likely give you some further commands to investigate

At this level it’s not very Victron specific, but closer to the Linux foundations that are much better documented elsewhere.

Good luck with the investigation, final advice from Victron’s perspective is to RMA a replacement.

I think it will be a RMA indeed.

Perhaps it can help other people, when attaching the sd card it does some work and tells to take out the sd card and powercyle:
