I hope to get NMEA2000 data out from my Signalk server v2.11.0. The server is connected to Simnet via VECan 1 on my Cerbo GX v3.55
I keep getting “error while creating channel” I have tried can0 and can1 as interface and cerbo has been rebooted several times. NMEA2000 source is set to Canbus (canboatjs). Any good ideas?
Hi,
Try vecan0 or vecan1.
(I’ve updated that doc just now)
Thank you, I have tried this as well - same error. I have checked VE-Can settings as well under Services as mentiod in you documentation. Any further ideas
Hi,
Did you make sure to restart Signalk in between the changes?
It has to be either can0 or vecan0, depending on what type Cerbo GX you have.
And make sure that a profile that has VE.Can in its name profile is selected in the GX settings for port 1.
Otherwise, what you can do is log in on the shell/ssh, and run “ifconfig” command on the command line and look at its output. It will list the available interfaces.
I have restartet every time. Where do I check the port 1 settings. Is it on cerbo gx or signalk settings?
Cerbo itself
I mean this menu. This is also the right setting for it:
You don’t need to enable NMEA2000-put for signalk to work btw. Thats about something else (see GX manual)
Thank you for your patience. The settings on cerbo port 1 are correct. Still the same error. How do I log in to the shell?
Hey. No problem.
That is explained here: Venus OS: Root Access [Victron Energy].
And a perhaps bigger signalk crowd can be found on the signalk discourse. I assume it can be found in google
One finale question. Is it necessary to set MQTT on?
Hi again, no its not.
Thanks for the support. I will continue in the SignalK community and will let you know if I find a solution.
Hello Matthijs,
Like Tom, when setting up Signal K, I get “Error while creating channel” for the n2k-on-ve.can-socket connection. I have the Cerbo Gx Mk2 and set the Interface to vecan0, NMEA 2000 source to Canbus (canboatjs), and I used a fixed value for the Unique Number ( I have a B&G MDF ), and restarted. …Same problem. I tried leaving the Unique Number field blank…got a random number… no difference. Also tried setting the manufacture Code to 0 due to B&G. No help. Any other thoughts on how I can get Signal K working? Thanks!
My Problem is not solved. I have the same Cerbo and have asked in the SignalK community - no solutions there. I can see NMEA2000 issues as SOC on my MFD so I am shure that the nmea2000 cable is connected. Mayby this can help in further investigations.
Hi Tom,
Same as you with most ( but not all ) of my Victron data going from my Cerbo GX to my N2k network. I made sure the fuse was taken out of the Victron cable going to the N2k backbone and also made sure the terminator was not put in the unused VE.can port. I still am missing some data and Matthijs has been helpful in assisting with that as well. It is frustrating that we cannot connect to Signal K…it was one of the reasons I bought the Cerbo. Let’s hope we can all find the fix!!
Hi Matthijs,
I decided to delete the connection profile in Singal K and then re-populate it to see if that made a difference. For the ID section, I just used cerbogx. Does that matter? Should it be something else? With cerbogx as the ID it still does not connect I get the same error. I hope you can help both myself and Tom to get this working. Thanks!
Hello Matthijs. I have an update. I was able to finally connect to Signal K. I was previously doing the restart remotely, but when I did it on the Touch 50 directly, it connected.
That said, I am trying to get the AIS data to send to Marine Traffic using the plugin AIS forwarder but nothing is happening. I have the IP and port addresses entered. On the Signal K dashboard there is no activity in the AIS plugin.
Is there something else I need to configure? Thanks.
No that doesn’t matter
Good that it works. I can’t explain what you did there though. How did you do the restart remotely?
That is really best answered by other SignalK users. Look for SignalK discord in google or in their website. SignalK Discord is a chat environment/support forum. Super responsive people usually.
Thanks for the help Matthijs. I used the remote console in the VRM. Worked when I did it on the boat on the Touch Display.
I will try contacting the Signal K group. The program says it’s sending AIS data but nothing shows up and my Marine Traffic app says my station is inactive?
Take a look at this blog, it might help you
