I have a houseboat with a LiFeP04 820Ah battery bank running a BMV-712 battery monitor connected to VenusOS running on a Raspberry Pi. Recently, I hit a low power BMS shutdown on my battery bank since we’ve had a lot of rain and my addition of a Starlink system + the refrigerator was too much. After powering off the fridge and getting some Ah back from the generator, I’ve noticed that the Ah widget on the VRM portal is incorrect since I lost a calibrated SOC from the power outage event. I can’t seem to find a way to change/reset the SOC via the VRM portal using the remote console however. Is there a way to do this via the remote console or do I have to go back to the boat to do this? The BMV-712 shows it is running firmware v4.12
Use the VictronConnect app on your Smartphone. If you are remote then you can choose to connect to your Cerbo GX via VRM (you get the option of Local or VRM). Choose VRM then click on your Cerbo then on the next page select devices, then you can select your BMV, and on the BMV page it is the same as if you were connected via Bluetooth directly, so go to settings and reset your SOC.
Here is a link to tje VictronConnect manual, remote section
Hi There,
Yep, my issue is that although I am able to connect remotely to my BMV-712 using the ‘Remote Console’ feature, once inside the remote console I see no way via the menus available, to change the SOC status. Below is a screenshot showing my remote console connection but no apparent way for me to reset/change the incorrect ‘State of Charge’ setting. Is there a way to do that through a remote console session?
Thanks,
Pete
Remote console is the same as being at the location using the local screen / console and this does not give access to the BMV settings. I am sorry I did not specifically state this.
I however did tell you how to achieve what you want by using he VictroConect app remotely, I can change my BMV or solar controller settings remotely like this.
Hi There,
I’m still confused but let me attempt to clarify. The only remote (off premises) access I have to my BMV-712 is via the VRM portal using the remote console. If I use the Victron Connect app via Bluetooth to connect to the BMV-712, I’m not really remote anymore. If there’s no way to change settings on the BMV-712 other than via a bluetooth connection or via the touch pad on the BMV-712 device itself, then I suppose that answers my question - it can’t be done.
Pete
You can use VictronConnect through internet, remotely. You don’t use Bluetooth, you use the internet.
When you start the VictronConnect:
- use the right tab (VRM), not the default selected one (Local).
- it will ask you to sign into VRM
- it will ask you to authorize VictronConnect to be used through VRM
- you will see your system name from VRM and you will select it
- click in the Devices tab (right one)
- use VictronConnect as if you were there, locally.
Hi Alex,
Yep, I’ve tried connecting to the device using the Victron app as you described (as opposed to using a browser to the VRM portal). As far as I can tell, I get the same results…there’s no way to change SOC capacity. How is connecting to the ‘VRM Portal’ via the app different than connecting to the VRM portal using a browser on a regular computer? I don’t see any difference in behavior.
Pete
Did you take a look at the link to the manual posted above?
I did. Is there a particular section I should focus on - perhaps I’m missing something.
Pete
By the way, the manual seems to only speak to these ways to connect. My question is around the ability to change settings when I’m off-prem (via the VRM portal).

Hi Mathias,
I’m not seeing any way to modify settings via the VictronConnect App for my remote system. My Gateway device (on the boat) is a Rpi running Venus OS and from the VC app I see that it is running firmware v2.66. Not sure if there is an update that I’d need to do here or something. I also see that 2 Way Communication is Disabled on the Gateway device (the manual says this needs to be enabled). Could that be the issue?
Pete
This is the problem, if you do not have 2 way communication enabled then you can not do any settings changes remotely.
For info, I am not at my boat at the moment, here are some screenshots from VictronConnect, if I press on local then I do no see any devices, I have no Victron stuff at home, If I choose VRM then I get a message that my Cerbo GX is online and if I click on the Cerbo then I go to the third screen with allows me to go to VRM (No) or click on devices and then you see the same screen as you would using Bluetooth when at your installation (the fourth image) and hence to the battery settings (fifth screenshot). This is a really handy feature and a real selling point for enabling 2-way communication.
It should work with v2.66 but that’s a very old version (over 3,5 years!).
As the manual says 2-way-communication needs to be on.
Ok, that sounds like the problem. I’m assuming I need to go on-prem to enable 2 way communication via a Blue Tooth/local connection to the BMV-712?
On the version on the gateway, I do see that Automatic Updates is enabled…Doesn’t sound like that has been happening though. Since this is running on a Rpi, do I have to do a complete fresh install of a new Venus OS image or is there a mechanism where I can trigger an update.
