Hey folks, replacing an existing 12v 3000w inverter charger on my boat with a new Multiplus II 12/3000, and have a question about DC wire size. Manual recommends 2 x 1/0 cables (cable length is approximately 2m), and I can do that with no problem, however my existing installation uses one 4/0 cable.
Obviously would be easier to drop the new unit in and use the existing cabling, just wondering if anyone here sees any issue with that course of action. Off the top of my head my concern is with the size of the grommet since the ampacity of the 4/0 exceeds that of 2 x 1/0.
Ray, it will be due to the terminations on the Multiplus. Large cables put lots of physical stress on the terminals. Two smaller cables is easier to manage.
If you have room, you could fit a busbar close to the Multiplus terminate the 4/0 on it and run 2 x 1/0 to the Multiplus
Thanks Les, the stress on the connectors makes sense. Honestly, the distance is so short, it probably makes the most sense to just replace the 4/0 with 1/0 anyway. Not to mention that 4/0 is awfully stiff to work with lol.
